Reaction of the Compounds upon Freezing of Aquous Solutions

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem této práce je najít redoxní systém ve vodném roztoku, který by bylo možné akcelerovat mražením. Optimálně by hledaná reakce měla probíhat pomalu nebo byla také zvažována neprobíhající reakce. K předpovězení průběhu reakce a způsobu, jakým budou reagovat, jsme užili znalostí z elektrochemie. Na základě standardních redoxních potenciálů bylo vybráno několik reakčních systémů pro potvrzení účinku mražení a tvorby ledu na reaktivitu a jejich rovnováhu. Základní myšlenkou bylo najít takový redoxní pár, který je rozpustný ve vodě, poskytující nejlépe takovou reakci, která by byla pozorovatelná pouhým okem, jako třeba změna barvy z modré na bezbarvou, oranžové na bezbarvou. Tato barevná změna by byla výsledkem samovolného předaní elektronů, spojená s nárůstem nebo poklesem oxidačního čísla. Dalším úkolem této práce je poukázat na fakt, že je potřeba být opatrný s mražením a nízkými teplotami. Ještě stále se předpokládá, že s klesající teplotou se reakce zpomalují. Na jedné straně je to pravda, avšak v mnoha případech dochází k právě opačnému jevu, nejen že se daná reakce nezpomalí, ale dokonce jsou známé případy akcelerace při snížení teploty ve vodném roztoku [2]. Poznatky o tomto jevu mají pestré možnosti využití v praxi. Průmyslné využití je jen jedno z nich, taktéž jsou možnosti, které určitě budou využívané v potravinářském průmyslu. Pro pochopení, jakým způsobem mechanismus akcelerace reakcí při mražení funguje, je potřebné abychom se detailněji podívali na led jako takový, jeho strukturu a jevy s ním související. Dalším důvodem, proč je prostudování ledu tak důležité, je jeho značný vliv v přírodě, a to hlavně v polárních oblastech. I když zaujímá relativně malou plochu, podílí se značnou částí na klimatických a jiných jevech. Například nebylo možné vysvětlit ozónové díry bez uvážení vlivu ledu a jeho vlastností. Taktéž je fascinující, jak se dokáže příroda vypořádat s tvořením ledu, jak v inhibici tvorby tak v podporování. Různorodé druhy zvířat i rostlin v průběhu evoluce nabyli schopnost přežít v prostředí s teplotami pod nulou. Takový zájem o prostudování ledu je jen jeden z důkazů, jak důležité je znát princip fungování věcí kolem nás. Získáváním poznatků, respektováním a učením se od přírody, je směr, kterým bychom se měli ubírat. Toto všechno je důležité pro vylepšení průmyslových procesů a pro komplexnější pochopení principů přírody. Prvotním cílem lidí by mělo být naučit se, jak neničit přírodu, pomáhat a chránit ji, tak jako ona chrání život už mnoho let.

Abstract:

The main object of this work was to find a system that would undergo an oxidation/reduction process in aqueous solution and would be accelerated by freezing. This reaction was supposed to run slowly or even a non-reacting system was taken in consideration. We were using the electrochemistry knowledge for behavior of compounds and the way they interact with each other. On hand of standard redox potentials, several reactions were chosen, to show the effect of freezing and ice formation on chemical reactions, reactivity and their equilibria. The basic concept was to find such a pair of reducing and oxidizing agents, that would be soluble in water, giving a reaction, which would at best be observable by the naked eye and spectroscopicaly, i.e. color change from blue to colorless, orange to yellow or colorless. This observable color change would be a result of simultaneous electron transfer and the increase and decrease of the oxidation states. Another object of this work is to point out the fact that one has to be careful with freezing and low temperatures. It is still considered, that the rate of chemical reactions decreases with decreasing temperature. This may be true, but there are also many cases, which behave quite opposite, not only that the reaction rate does not decrease, but even an acceleration with lowering the temperature can be observed in water(ice)[2]. The knowledge of this phenomenon has a large scale of use in practical applications. The industrial use is only one of them, there are also possibilities in food industry and other will surely follow. To understand, how the acceleration mechanism works and which conditions are necessary for its occurrence, we need to take a closer look at ice, its structure at the phenomena derived from these effects. Another very important reason for ice to be studied and better understood, is the huge impact on the environment, especially in the polar regions. Even though not so large in the area, which it covers, it participates as a influential factor in climate and many other phenomena, i.e. ozone wholes over the polar regions could not be explained without taking a closer look at ice and its properties. It is also fascinating to see how our nature can put up with ice formation, both in inhibiting ice formation or supporting it. Various animals or plants have gained the ability during the evolution to survive in cold or even below-zero environments. Such a great interest in ice research is only one of the facts that prove the importance of knowing why and how things work around us. Gaining knowledge, learning from nature and respecting it is the way to go. For improving the industrial processes, for a more complex understanding and the most important how not to destroy our planet, but to support it, like it always supported life for so many years.
