Sniping effect in private value and common value auctions

Abstract:

The aim of this diploma thesis is to compare the size of the sniping effect in auctions with common value and private value. The first part of the thesis discusses the theoretical background from the auction environment and presents an electronic auction portal from which data are collected. Subsequently, it explains which auctions can be considered as private value auctions and which as common value auctions. Two main methods for comparing the size of the sniping effect are chosen. The first method is the percentage change in the price, the second method is the explanation by the model approach, where the explained variable shows what is the course of the change in the auction price in the last hour. Finally, the acquired knowledge and suggestions for the modification of this work are discussed.

Abstract:

Cieľom tejto diplomovej práce je porovnať veľkosť sniping efektu v aukciách so spoločným a aukciách so súkromným ocenením. Prvá časť práce sa zaoberá teoretickými poznatkami z aukčného prostredia a predstavuje elektronický aukčný portál, z ktorého sú dáta zbierané. Následne sa zaoberá tým, ktoré aukcie môžeme považovať za aukcie so súkromným a ktoré za aukcie so spoločným ocenením. Sú zvolené dve hlavné metódy porovnania veľkosti sniping efektu. Prvou sú percentuálne zmeny ceny, druhou vysvetlenie modelovým prístupom, kde vysvetľovaná premenná ukazuje to, aký je priebeh zmeny ceny aukcie v poslednej hodine. Záverom sú diskutované nadobudnuté poznatky a námety na modifikáciu tejto práce.
