Factors affecting the development of marital satisfaction

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá longitudinálním zkoumáním manželské spokojenosti. Kromě samotného popisu tohoto vývoje bylo cílem také ověření souvislostí mezi tímto vývojem a určitými charakteristikami manželství. Byla analyzována data získaná v longitudinálním projektu ELSPAC (Evropská longitudinální studie těhotenství a dětství). K analýzám bylo využito víceúrovňové modelování. Byl ověřován rozdíl ve spokojenosti mezi muži a ženami, rozdíl mezi prvními a druhými sňatky, dále byla ověřována závislost vývoje spokojenosti na počátečním věku manželů a rozdílu těchto věků. Další uvažované prediktory se týkaly především oblasti manželských interakcí, jednalo se o množství hádek mezi manželi, frekvenci sexuálních kontaktů, množství komunikace, rozdělení domácích prací a rozhodování. Posledními charakteristikami byly vzájemné percepce chování a osobnosti partnerů. Byl zjištěn pokles manželské spokojenosti v průběhu prvních 15 let trvání manželství. Taktéž byl potvrzen předpoklad o nižší spokojenosti žen. Ukázalo se také, že tento rozdíl je nejvyšší v oblasti rozdělení domácích prací. Rozdíl mezi prvními a druhými sňatky nebyl potvrzen. Vlivy ostatních prediktorů jsou popsány ve výsledcích a znázorněny grafy.

Abstract:

The focus of this study is the longitudinal development of marital satisfaction. Apart from the description of the general developmental trajectories we analyzed the relationship between this development and selected characteristics of marriage. We used data from the European Longitudinal Study of Pregnancy and Childhood (ELSPAC). The linear random coefficients model analysis were used. We looked at differences between the development of marital satisfaction of men and women, between first and second marriages and at the dependence of satisfaction development on age of spouses. We also used marital interaction characteristic as predictors - quantity of conflicts between spouses, sex frequency, communication, division of household chores and decision-making. There were also some predictors describing partners’ perception of personality and behavior of each other. The decline of marital satisfaction during first 15 years of marriage was found. Also the hypothesis of difference between men and women was confirmed (women's satisfaction is lower). This difference is maximal in satisfaction with household division. Difference between first and second marriages was not discovered. Further findings are described.
