Censorship in the American Film Industry

Abstract:

The topic of this undergraduate thesis is the censorship in American film industry, or more precisely the self-censoring methods used within the industry since the beginning of the evolution of American cinema, with a particular emphasis on the contemporary problems of the today´s American chief censoring body, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). The thesis is divided into four main sections, with the first three parts covering the history of American film censorship and the eventual development of the Film Rating System and with the fourth part dedicated solely to the modern-day controversies of the MPAA and the System. The first part describes film censorship in the early 20th century and explains some of the reasons that led to the established of the notorious Production Code. The second part is then devoted purely to the Code and as such spans nearly three decades during which the Code was in effect. The third part focuses on the time period after the year 1968, when the Film Rating System was created. It follows the evolution of the System while also shortly mentioning some of the factors that motivated its creation. The final part then introduces five main reasons for which the Rating System is currently criticized. In the conclusion the thesis offers a look on the possibilities of the System in the future.

Abstract:

Tématem této bakalářské práce je cenzura v americkém filmovém průmyslu, respektive sebe-cenzurní postupy používané v tomto průmyslu od počátku vývoje americké kinematografie, se zvláštním důrazem na současné problémy dnešního nejvýznamnějšího cenzurního orgánu, Americké filmové asociace (MPAA). Bakalářská práce je rozdělena do čtyř hlavních částí, z nichž první tři pojednávají o historii americké filmové cenzury a následném vývoji filmových ratingů a čtvrtá je pak věnována výhradně dnešním kontroverzím Americké filmové asociace a systému ratingů. První část popisuje filmovou cenzuru na počátku 20. století a osvětluje některé z důvodů, které vedly k zavedení nechvalně známého Produkčního kodexu. Druhá část je pak plně věnována tomuto kodexu a tudíž zachycuje období téměř třiceti let, kdy byl kodex v platnosti. Třetí část je zaměřena na období po roce 1968, ve kterém byl zaveden systém filmových ratingů. Sleduje vývoj tohoto systému a zároveň krátce zmiňuje některé faktory, které jeho vznik ovlivnily. Poslední část pak uvádí pět hlavních důvodů, pro které je ratingový systém v současnosti kritizován. V závěru pak práce nabízí náhled na možnosti tohoto systému v budoucnu.
