The reception of Karel Čapek's play R.U.R. and its background in Russian cultural area

Abstract:

This thesis attempts to characterize and analyze reception of Karel Čapek’s drama R.U.R. (1920) as compared to his other works in Soviet and Post-Soviet cultural area. The main objective of this study is to track changes in readers' perception in both specified periods. In accordance with the set objective and tasks the results obtained in the course of study are not statistical data of empirical analysis of R.U.R. reception but rather definition of certain aspects of its problematic which become actual differently through time and remain the most significant globally until now. These aspects were analyzed in three prospects: literary critics and reviewer’s evaluation, perception by “general reader” and literary interpretation by Soviet and Post-Soviet writers. Also Karel Čapek’s drama was compared with science fiction which is presently very popular among readers. Finally the study touched upon the connection of R.U.R. problematic with philosophical issues of technology.

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce je pokusem o analýzu nejvýraznějších tendencí sovětské a postsovětské recepce dramatu K. Čapka R.U.R. (1920) na pozadí vnímání jeho dalších děl. Základním cílem práce bylo prozkoumat změny v čtenářském vnímání jak v sovětském období, tak v období po pádu komunistického režimu. Dosažené výsledky disertační práce tedy nepředstavují statistická data zjištěná pomocí empirické analýzy recepce R.U.R., ale vymezení konkrétních aspektů její problematiky, které jsou různě aktualizovány v čase a které až dodnes hrají důležitou roli ve všeobecně lidském kontextu. Tyto aspekty byly analyzovány v trojí projekci: z hlediska literárněvědné a literárněkritické recepce, vnímání takzvaného masového čtenáře a interpretace v literární tvorbě sovětských a postsovětských autorů. Čapkovo drama R.U.R. je dáváno do souvislosti s fantastickou literaturou (science fiction), která se těší velké čtenářské oblibě, a to nejen v Rusku. V disertační práci byly také nastíněny souvislosti problematiky R.U.R. s okruhem filozofických problémů technologie.
