Rape culture and the missing Indigenous women in Canada and the United States

Abstract:

The diploma thesis focuses on Indigenous girls and women in Canada and the USA, most specifically on ongoing issues connected with murdered and missing Indigenous girls and women (MMIW). Firstly, the thesis introduces Indigenous people, their way of living and the areas where they live and secondly, it points out major issues Indigenous women face, such as intimate partner violence, human trafficking, and rape. Then, it shows how governments deal with these issues. This thesis also includes a case study that focuses on two specific areas within Canada and the U.S., namely British Columbia and Alaska, both of which are among the areas with the highest rates of murdered and missing Indigenous girls and women. Results of this study reveal that in those areas there is an insufficiency in police departments; that Indigenous women are targeted more frequently than non-Indigenous women for several reasons; and that killers of these girls and women were not usually caught due to lack of technology or due to remoteness of villages, where they live.

Abstract:

Magisterská práce se soustředí na domorodé (indigenous) dívky a ženy v Kanadě a USA, a to převážně na dlouhodobou problematiku týkající se jejich zmizení a vražd. Práce nejprve představí domorodé obyvatele, jejich život a místa, kde žijí a dále uvede hlavní problémy, kterým domorodé dívky a ženy čelí, a to převážně partnerské násilí, obchodování s lidmi a znásilňování. Dále práce poukáže na to, jak se k tomuto problému staví vlády obou zemí. Součástí práce je rovněž případová studie, která se zaměřuje na dvě vybrané oblasti z Kanady a USA, konkrétně na Britskou Kolumbii a Aljašku, které patří k těm oblastem, kde domorodé dívky a ženy mizí nejvíce. Výsledky studie ukážou, že zastoupení policie není dostatečné v těchto oblastech; že domorodé dívky a ženy jsou napadány častěji než nedomorodé, a to z několika důvodů; a že vrahové těchto žen a dívek většinou nebyli identifikováni z důvodu nedostatečné technologie anebo z důvodu odlehlosti vesnic, ve kterých domorodci žijí.
