Lying trunks of Picea abies (L.) Karst in a mountain wooded coutryside: the lenght of decomposition and the role in ecosystem dynamics

Abstract:

Ležící kmeny hrají důležitou roli v dynamice horské lesnaté krajiny. Pomalu rozkládající se mrtvé dřevo ovlivňuje svahové procesy, hydrologii, biologickou rozmanitost, koloběh uhlíku a podporuje přirozenou obnovu lesních ekosystémů. Cílem studie bylo vyhledat jedince v přísně chráněných lokalitách NP a CHKO Šumava. Během terénního průzkumu byly zjišťovány charakteristiky prostředí i případů a odebírány vzorky stojícího a ležícího kmene pro následné laboratorní šetření (stáří, hustota). Bylo zjištěno, že nejstarší případy se nacházejí v NPR Boubínský prales, přestože byly poznamenány četnými disturbancemi. Výsledky prokazují dominanci stojících dřevin ve věku kolem 140 let v posledním stupni rozkladu. Nejstarším vypátraným jedincem byl smrk, starý téměř 300 let, jenž ukazuje minimální dobu od jeho pádu.

Abstract:

Lying trunks play an important role in a dynamics of a mountain wooded countryside. The wood that is slowly decomposing affects the slope processes, hydrology, biologic diversity, carbon cycle and supports natural recovery of the forest ecosystems. The goal of the study was to find individuals in the stricly protected locations of NP and CHKO Šumava. During the field research, the characteristics of the environment and the individuals were examinated and samples of standing and lying trunks were taken to be later examinated in the laboratory (age, density). It was found that the oldest cases are located in the NPR Boubínský prales even though they were affected by frequent disturbance. The results show the domination of standing trunks in the age of approximately 140 years in the last stage of decomposition. The oldest discovered individual was a spruce in the age of approximately 300 years, which shows a short period of time since its collapse.
