The problem of Chinese modernization in the novel Wolf totem

Abstract:

The problem of modernization and change is one of the key problems of the modern Chinese history. As one of the oldest civilizations China stood at the beginning of 20th century before a challenge, when compared to rest of the world it was underdeveloped and that needed to change. Modernization as a process of catching up to the West brings with itself a question of preserving the own Chinese identity, how to modernize a country without the loss of what makes it special. Topic of modernization is also closely linked with a feeling of Chinese self-loathing. During complex civilization change the obvious problem is the loss of cultural Chinese identity that is linked with a change of formulation of identity of the Chinese nation in relationship to other states, with which it is in contact. This problematic is one of the key topics of the novel Wolf Totem, on which this paper focuses. In the book, written by Jiang Rong, and mainly in its epilogue, we can find author's opinions about the topic of modernization, that affects the identity of the Chinese nation. The purpose of this paper is to define, how the author expresses his thoughts through the characters of the book and describe it by means of examples. Paper will differentiate between the text of the novel and epilogue, which follows the book only by its outer structure, but the author uses it mainly as an appeal to a reader. This epilogue is usually missing from translations of the novel, because it is mainly targeted at Chinese reader. At the same time, this paper will make a distinction between what the text of the book is describing and what is by researchers identifiable as a discourse, that does not have to be obvious for an ordinary reader. To achieve this goal, the secondary literature from various researchers will be used. The paper's other focus is on the modern Chinese intellectual. Opinions of various author on this topic differ, we can find not only descriptions, but also a critique at infatuation about problems of society. With the use of secondary literature this paper will compare these approaches. At last, the paper will also consider if these, critiques and observations can be seen in the novel Wolf Totem and its epilogue, together with the description of various ideological problems, that Jiang Rong addresses.

Abstract:

Problém modernizácie a premeny je jedným z kľúčových problémov moderných čínskych dejín. Ako jedna z najstarších civilizácií stála Čína na začiatku 20. storočia pred výzvou, kedy v rozvoji zaostávala za zvyškom sveta a potrebovala to zmeniť. Modernizácia ako proces dobiehania Západu so sebou nesie otázku zachovania vlastnej čínskej identity, ako pristupovať k modernizácii krajiny tak, aby nestratila nič z toho, čo ju robilo výnimočnou. Téma modernizácie je tiež úzko spätá s pocitom čínskeho sebapohŕdania. Pri komplexnej civilizačnej premene je zjavným problémom strata kultúrnej čínskej identity, na čo nadväzuje i zmena formulácie identity čínskeho národa vo vzťahu k ostatným štátom, s ktorými je v kontakte. Táto problematika je jednou z kľúčových tém románu Totem vlka, na ktorý sa táto práca zameriava. V knihe od autora Jiang Ronga môžeme nájsť autorove vyjadrenia k problémom modernizácie, ktoré ovplyvňujú identitu čínskeho národa a to najmä v závere knihy. Zámerom tejto práce je určiť, ako autor predáva svoje myšlienky skrz postavy knihy a na príkladoch ich popísať. Bude rozlišovať medzi textom románu a doslovom autora, ktorý na knihu nadväzuje len vo svojej vonkajšej štruktúre, ale autor ho hlavne využíva ako príhovor k čitateľovi. Tento doslov sa spravidla nevyskytuje v prekladoch knihy do iných jazykov, nakoľko je zameraný najmä na čínskeho čitateľa. Zároveň sa práca bude snažiť rozlišovať to, čo text popisuje a to, čo je bádateľmi identifikovateľné ako diskurz, ktorý nemusí byť pre bežného čitateľa na prvý pohľad zjavný. K dosiahnutiu tohto cieľa bude použitá sekundárna literatúra od rôznych bádateľov, ktorí sa vyjadrili k tejto téme. Práca sa ďalej zameriava na obraz moderného čínskeho intelektuála. Názory rôznych autorov sa na túto tému líšia, objavujú sa nielen opisy ale i kritika na zaslepenosť voči problémom spoločnosti. Za využitia sekundárnej literatúry bude práca tieto prístupy porovnávať a spisovať. Nakoniec sa práca pozastaví i nad tým, či je možné tieto kritiky a pozorovania vidieť i v románe Totem vlka a jeho doslove, spolu s opisom viacerých ideologických problémov, ktorým sa Jiang Rong v knihe venuje.
