Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá způsobem, jakým je v americké kinematografii zobrazován veterán z Vietnamu sužovaný posttraumatickou stresovou poruchou (PTSD). Film, jakožto rozšířený a populární fenomén, dokáže přesvědčivě sdělovat a přenášet významy a ideje, a ovlivňovat své publikum. Hollywoodské filmy sice byly vždy natáčeny především s vidinou komerčního úspěchu, ale také významně přispěly k obecné diskuzi týkající se Vietnamské války a jejích důsledků, včetně problematiky veteránů z Vietnamu s PTSD. Převažujícím motivem ve filmech, zabývající se traumatizovanými veterány, je muž, jehož změnila válka, a který se vrací domů duševně otřesený. Diplomová práce analyzuje, jakým způsobem je tento muž, veterán z Vietnamu, zobrazen v jednotlivých filmech, a rozebírá klíčové aspekty, které utvářejí obraz tohoto veterána. PTSD a její symptomy slouží jako interpretační rámec této analýzy.

Abstract:

The thesis explores an image of a Vietnam veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as it has been portrayed in American cinematography. Film, as a widespread and popular phenomenon, is potentially very powerful conveyer of meanings and ideas, and it has ability to influence its audience. Hollywood movies have been made primarily for profit, but they have also relevantly contributed to general discussion about the Vietnam war and its consequences, including the issue of Vietnam veterans with PTSD. The theme which prevailed in movies dealing with traumatised Vietnam veterans is a man who was changed by the war and returns home, being mentally wounded. The thesis discusses the way this man, a Vietnam veteran, is portrayed in films, and analyses key aspects that influence the image of the veteran. PTSD and its symptoms provide an interpretative framework for the analysis.
