The Language of YouTube Beauty Video Titles

Abstract:

Tato magisterská práce se zabývá názvy videí uveřejněných na YouTube z oblasti beauty. Protože tato oblast zatím není populárním tématem vědeckých prací v oblasti lingvistiky, pokusila jsem se tyto názvy videí vymezit ve vztahu k novinovým titulkům definovaným Swanem. Svou práci jsem rozdělila na tři části. První část práce se snaží čtenáře seznámit s YouTube. I když je má práce lingvistického zaměření, cítila jsem potřebu čtenáře krátce informovat o historii YouTube. Uvedla jsem také jak velkou součástí našich každodenních životů se YouTube stalo. Ukazuji také, že se YouTube stalo novým interaktivním médiem, které přispělo ke vzniku mezinárodních tematicky zaměřených komunit. Druhá část čtenáře seznamuje s korpusem, který v další části používám k analýze. Mám šest kritérií, které mé zdroje musí splňovat. Autoři musí být z beauty komunity, musí pocházet pevninské části USA, jsou to ženy kolem dvacítky a to, co na YouTube ukazují, se naučily samy. Před YouTube nebyly nijak formálně vzdělávány v oblasti krásy a estetiky. Nejsou to například profesionální kosmetičky. Poslední kritérium se týká videí samotných, která musí pocházet z období mezi červencem a prosincem 2013. Třetí část obsahuje analýzu. Po snaze vymezit názvy videí na YouTube kontrastováním s novinovými titulky podle Swana přecházím k analýze samotné. Téma se snažím uchopit ze široka a ukázat tak komplexnost odlišnosti názvů. První oblastí analýzy je sémantika názvů. Zde poukazuji na změnu významu již existujících slov za pomoci analogie. Ukazuji také tvorbu nových slov, která se v názvech odehrává. Další oblastí je syntax. Zde dopodrobna rozebírám používání frází s podstatnými jmény a slovesy v názvech. Poslední oblastí mojí analýzy je používání technik pro ovládání pozornosti čtenáře. Zde rozebírám různé zvláštnosti používání speciálních znaků a punkčních znamének v názvech. Také se zmiňuji o neobvyklém používání velkých písmen.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with YouTube beauty video titles. This area is not a widely researched one in linguistics, therefore, I tried to define the titles in relation to Swan’s definition of newspaper headlines. My thesis contains three parts. The first part informs about YouTube. Even though the focus of my thesis is linguistics, I wanted to give the reader insight into its cultural specifics. I show the extent to which YouTube is a part of everyday lives of great many people. I provide its brief history and show that YouTube is an interactive medium where new international communities emerged. The second part introduces the corpus that is subsequently analyzed. There were six criteria during the choice of materials. The authors are from the beauty community, they originate from the mainland USA, they are females in their twenties and they are self-made and self-taught people. They did not receive any formal education in cosmetics prior to entering YouTube. The last criterion affects the videos: they were published in the period between July and December 2013. The third part features the analysis. I try to define YouTube video titles against Swan’s definition of headlines. I try to approach the topic extensively thus showing the complexity of the difference in YouTube titles. The first area that I explore is semantics. Semantic processes that work in YouTube video titles not only create new words, they also create new meanings of existing words. The next area of syntax deals with the use of noun phrases and verb phrases. The last area of interest are attention-controlling techniques. They comprise of the special use of various characters, capitalization and punctuation in the video titles.
