Chemistry of some environmentally relevant organic compounds at the air-ice interface

Abstract:

Tato práce zahrnuje několik fyzikálně-chemických studií procesů, které se mohou odehrávat v přírodním sněhu nebo ledu. I když výsledky výzkumu jsou environmentálně relevantní, většina experimentální práce byla provedena v laboratoři. Vzhledem k heterogenní povaze přírodního ledu a sněhu se prováděly laboratorní experimenty na tzv. umělém sněhu. Jeho podobnost s přírodní matricí, jako je velikost specifického povrchu, umožnila studovat chemické reakce a interakce organických molekul na ledovém povrchu a srovnávat výsledky studií s chováním molekul v environmentálně relevantních vzorcích. Jeden projekt zahrnoval studium vlivu zmrzlé matrice ledu na difúzi malých organických molekul. Fotochemie 4-methyldibenzylketonu zde byla využita ke studiu tzv. klecového efektu, jehož analýza umožnila zhodnotit vliv mikrostruktury ledu na dynamiku radikálových páru při různých teplotách. V dalším projektu byla studována kinetika ozonizační reakce 1,1-difenylethylenu na povrchu ledu při různých teplotách. Bylo zjištěno, že průběh reakce může být popsán pomocí Langmuirova-Hinshelwooda modelu jen při vyšších teplotách. Při snížení teploty se však tento model nedal použít, jelikož chování systému odpovídalo spíše Eleyovu-Ridealovu modelu. V důsledku to znamená, že se reakční rychlost ozonolýzy neočekávaně zvyšuje s klesající teplotou. Vysvětlení spočívá ve zjištění, že se snižující se teplotou v procesu mrznutí tzv. kvazi-kapalné vrstvy se počet reaktivních míst na povrchu ledu zvyšuje, což ovlivňuje pozorovanou zdánlivou rychlost reakce. Zároveň byl zjištěn i vliv iontových nečistot přítomných na povrchu ledu. Výsledky byly nakonec využity pro odhad dob života derivátů nenasycených uhlovodíků, které se běžně vyskytují v polárních oblastech, a byl tak zhodnocen environmentální dopad jedné z principiálních reakcí organických polutantů v přírodním sněhu.

Abstract:

This thesis describes studies of some physico-chemical processes that occur on the ice surface. Mostly laboratory-based experimental works were performed, and the results are related to the knowledge extension in the field of environmental polar research. Due to spatial and temporal heterogeneous nature of ice or snow, artificially-produced snow samples were produced in order to study the processes in the laboratory. In the first project, artificial snow was utilized to evaluate the reaction probability of some environmentally relevant and representative organic compounds at the air-ice interface by determining the key parameter — the apparent specific surface area (ASSA). The results demonstrated that use of artificial snow (ice) as a readily available reaction matrix is suitable for investigation of environmentally relevant processes. In another project, the influence of local environment to the solute-solute interactions in ice and snow surface was investigated. The photochemistry of 4-methyldibenzyl ketone (MeDBK) was used to probe the ‘cage effect’, i.e., the influence of microstructure of ice or snow to control the self-organization and dynamics of radical-pairs at the air-ice interface. In the third project, the heterogeneous ozonation reaction kinetics of a representative alkene, 1,1-diphenylethylene (DPE), was determined at different temperatures. The reaction kinetics followed the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) mechanism showing a clear, non-linear dependence of the observed pseudo-first order rate constants to ozone concentrations at higher temperatures close to the ice melting point. However at 188 K, the observed pseudo-first order rate constant data neither fit well with the LH equation nor showed linear relationship with ozone concentration which would correspond to the Eley-Rideal (ER) mechanism. A remarkable and unexpected increase in the apparent ozonation rates with decreasing temperature was evaluated, and the ASSA values of the snow samples were also estimated at different temperatures. The results suggested that an increase in the number of surface reactive sites, and possibly higher ozone uptake coefficients, were responsible for the apparent rate acceleration of DPE ozonation at the air−ice interface at lower temperatures. The increasing number of reactive sites was argued to be related to the fact that organic molecules are displaced more to the top of a disordered interface (quasi-liquid) (DI) layer on the ice surface which makes them more accessible to the gas-phase reactants. To demonstrate the environmental relevance, the estimated lifetime of DPE on the ice surface was found to decrease from ∼5 days at 258 K to ∼13 h at 188 K at submonolayer DPE loadings for typical atmospheric ozone concentrations in polar areas (approximately 20 ppbv).
