Le Corbusier in the new town of Most: Contribution to the Question of Application of Le Corbusier's Theories in Socialistic Society between 1960 and 1989

Abstract:

Tématem práce je pokus o uchopení a interpretaci vzorku poválečné socialistické architektonické tvorby v Československu, konkrétně v novém Mostě, za významného přispění teorií francouzského modernistického architekta, Le Corbusiera, jako referenčního rámce. Zkoumaný materiál je časově vymezen léty 1960 až 1989. Interpretační metoda vychází jednak z hermeneutiky Hanse Georga Gadamera, dále Jacoba Burckhardta, Jana Mukařovského a postmoderny. Postupy jsou čerpány od Jiřího Kroupy a Pavla Halíka, dále Rema Koolhaase, Alda Rossiho či Václava Richtera. Podrobněji se zaobírá pojmy jako je purismus, pět bodů nové architektury, tři základní požitky obyvatele města, modulor, Únité d´habitation, CIAM a Athénská charta; zmiňuje výstavbu mosteckých čtvrtí, problémy identity, zahušťování hmoty města, míjení, solitérní architekturu a doplňkovou výstavbu; postuluje teze jako socialistický objednavatel, mostecký panelový dům – mlýnek na maso, nová architektonická úloha, altruismus a stroj, beton a kvádr, vznik monumentu či mostecký antimanhattan.

Abstract:

This work is concerned with understanding and interpretation of the phenomenon of architecture build under the socialistic regime in former Czechoslovakia, more precisely in the new town of Most, between 1960 and 1989. Architectonical theories of an impressive French modern artist – Le Corbusier – were applied here providing a crucial reference frame. Besides the contemporary postmodern philosophy, this work was inspired by hermeneutics of Hans Georg Gadamer, by the legacy of Jacob Burckhardt and Jan Mukařovský. Methods used were partly taken from Jiří Kroupa and Pavel Halík, Rem Koolhaase, Aldo Rossi and Václav Richter. The paper discusses architectonical ideas as purism, five points of the new architecture, three most important indulgences of a citizen, modulor, Únité d´habitation, CIAM and the Athen´s Chart document with a description of a real architecture build in Most and ideas as the problem of identity, compression of architectonical mass of the town of Most, the passing by of architectonical concepts and its practical usage, solitaires and additive urbanism. The synthesis produces unique concepts such as socialism and the client, the idea of a panel building in Most as the invention of a meat mill, a new architectonical order to be applied in Most, altruism and a machine, concrete and a block, the monument or the antimanhattan in Most.
