Democratization in de facto states: comparative study of Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Nagorno-Karabakh and Transnistria

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá demokratizací v postsovětských de facto státech od jejich vzniku do současnosti. V první čísti je popsán proces demokratizace v souvislosti se specifiky neuznaných států, tedy se sebeurčením, etnickým konfliktem, specifickou ekonomickou situací a malou velikostí. Rovněž je popsána strategie „demokratizace za uznání“. Úvodní část má také za cíl zjistit, zda je proces demokratizace možný v souvislosti s absencí mezinárodního uznání. V druhé části práce je popsán proces demokratizace v Abcházii, Jižní Osetii, Náhorním Karabachu a Podněstří. V druhé části jsou rovněž popsány faktory podporujících demokratizaci a bránících demokratizaci v těchto státech, což je hlavním výzkumným cílem práce.

Abstract:

Bachelor thesis is addressing democratization in post-soviet de facto states since their creation until today. First part describes the process of democratization in relation to the specifics of unrecognised states, namely self-determination, ethnic conflict, specific economic situation and small size. The strategy of “democratization for recognition” is also described. Another goal of the first part is to find out whether democratization is possible with the absence of international recognition. Second part describes the process of democratization in Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Nagorno Karabakh and Transnistria. This part also describes factors promoting and hindering democracy in these states, which is the main research goal of this thesis.
