Depressive symptomatology and romantic relationships in adolescence

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá souvislostí mezi romantickými vztahy adolescentů a depresivitou. K sekundární analýze byla použita data získaná od třináctiletých, patnáctiletých a sedmnáctiletých adolescentů v rámci studie ELSPAC. V teoretické části je nejprve popsán vývoj romantických vztahů a jeho souvislosti s předchozími vztahovými zkušenostmi (raná citová vazba, vrstevnické vztahy) a psychosociálním vývojem (emocionalita, identita, sexualita). Dále jsou představeny poznatky týkající se deprese v adolescenci a dva koncepty způsobu nahlížení na depresi jako proměnnou. V práci je používán dimenzionální přístup k proměnné depresivita. Závěr teoretického úvodu pak tvoří propojení tématiky romantických vztahů a depresivity. Zde jsou představeny výzkumy, které prokazují vyšší míru depresivity u adolescentů se zkušeností s romantickým vztahem. Jsou představeny tři důvody, které tento vztah mohou vysvětlovat, a to romantický vztah v brzké adolescenci, prožitek rozchodu a nevhodný partner. Pro zjištění depresivity adolescentů byl použít MFQ dotazník, pro zjištění zkušeností s romantickým vztahem byla použita upravená verze Dating Questionnare. Testy Mann – Whitney U neprokázaly, že zkušenost s romantickým vztahem ve 13, 15 a 17 letech souvisí s vyšší mírou depresivity. Také se neprokázalo, že patnáctiletí a sedmnáctiletí adolescenti s prožitkem rozchodu mají vyšší míru depresivity než adolescenti, kteří rozchod neprožili. Výsledky studie jsou porovnány s dřívějšími teoretickými zjištěními. Závěrem jsou předloženy limity výzkumu a nastíněny návrhy výzkumů do budoucna.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the relation between romantic relationships and depressive symptomatology. The secondary analysis used data obtained from thirteen, fifteen and seventeen years old adolescents in the study ELSPAC. The theoretical section first describes the development of romantic relationships and the context of previous relational experiences (early attachment, peer relationships), and psychosocial development (emotion, identity, sexuality). In theoretical section, there are also presented findings on depression in adolescence and two concepts way of looking at depression as a variable. The paper uses depressivity as a dimensional variable. Last part of the theoretical section consists of the combination of romantic relationships and depression. There are presented research showing higher rates of depression in adolescents with experience in romantic relationships. I present three reasons that may explain this relationship - a romantic relationship in early adolescence, experience of break-up and inappropriate partner. To determine adolescents' depression was used MFQ questionnaire. To determine an experience with romantic relationships was used a modified version of the Dating Questionnare. Tests Mann - Whitney U not showed that the experience of a romantic relationship at 13, 15 and 17 years is associated with higher level of depressive symptomatology. Also it was not determined that fifteen and seventeen years old with experience of break up have a higher rate of depressivity than adolescents who did not have experience with break up. Results of the study are compared with previous empirical findings. Finally, the limits of research are presented and outlined proposals for future research.
