Subtitling common slang of urban youth into Czech: a novice translator and the return of the first audience

Abstract:

This thesis aims to outline the most common mistakes made by student-beginner translators when subtitling substandard French. The thesis also provides an audience perspective on subtitling, allowing the reader to understand audience preferences. The material used is based on student translations from the past few years on the animated series Lascars and the students' design of subtitles and their evaluation by the audience for the first part of the hitherto untranslated but highly successful 2012 French comedy Les Kaïra. The theoretical aspects of substandard French, set in the broader context of the suburban youth discourse, and the problem of translating different socio-cultural phenomena, are reflected in the thesis in an innovative methodological approach, combining the translation analysis method and the sociolinguistic method of interviews. Using analysis of the corpus of student works, the first hypothesis - which assumed that the most common error of novice translators is levelling, i.e. the tendency to translate expressions from substandard French by a less substandard layer of Czech - was proved. As a practical translation output, subtitles were created and presented to a sample of six people from different parts of the Czech Republic for review. The aim was to prove the second hypothesis that the audience would have the most remarks on the regionalisms used. This hypothesis was not proved as viewers commented most on the subtitles' overall wording and speed.

Abstract:

Cílem práce je nastínit nejčastější chyby, které při titulkování substandardní francouzštiny dělají studenti-začínající překladatelé. Práce zároveň přináší divácký pohled na titulky a umožňuje tak čtenáři získat povědomí o preferencích diváků. Materiálovým východiskem se staly studentské práce z uplynulých let na animovaném seriálu Lascars a vlastní návrh titulků a jejich evaluace diváky na úvodní části do češtiny dosud nepřeložené, ale velice úspěšné francouzské komedie Les Kaïra z roku 2012. Teoretické aspekty substandardní francouzštiny, zasazené do širšího kontextu diskurzu předměstské mládeže, a problematiku překladu často odlišných socio-kulturních jevů, reflektuje práce do inovativního metodologického přístupu, kdy dochází ke kombinaci překladatelské metody analýzy překladu a sociolingvistické metody rozhovorů. Pomocí analýzy korpusu studentských prací byla prokázána první hypotéza, která předpokládala, že nejčastější chybou začínajících překladatelů je nivelace, tedy sklon překládat výrazy ze substandardní francouzštiny méně substandardní vrstvou češtiny. Jako praktický překladatelský výstup byly vytvořeny titulky, které byly následně předloženy k posouzení vzorku šesti lidí z různých částí Česka. Cílem bylo prokázání druhé hypotézy, kde bylo předpokládáno, že nejvíce výhrad budou mít diváci k použitým regionalismům. Tato hypotéza se neprokázala, neboť diváci nejvíce komentovali celkovou formulaci titulků a jejich rychlost.
