Representation of queer people in the media

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis aims to analyse news stories containing information about LGBTIQ people, who are, according to critical discourse analyst van Dijk, a weak group in society. The work aims to explore how queer people are portrayed in the Czech and British online media, e.g. in online news, and contrast their images. The analysis is drawn on the Critical Discourse Analysis approach as proposed by Teun van Dijk, who focuses on the power shown in the discourse of powerful groups and who presupposes that the differences in power between the powerful and weak groups are reflected in the discourse structures such as headlines, implications, metaphors, presuppositions, lexical expressions, and passive sentence structured inclusivity. The hypothesis is that the Czech media is still very conservative in portraying controversial themes, while the British will have a more diverse stance. The significance of this study is fundamental as the analysis was conducted during June 2022, the last pride month, and serves to provide a timely and relevant contribution to the field of critical discourse analysis and queer representation. The analysis results have shown that both British and Czech newspapers present the community using positive language with the differentiation of Czech newspapers, not providing any room for presentation or use of their voice, initially confirming the hypothesis.

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je analyzovat zpravodajské příspěvky obsahující informace o LGBTIQ lidech, kteří jsou podle kritického diskurzního analytika van Dijka slabou skupinou ve společnosti. Práce si klade za cíl prozkoumat, jak jsou queer lidé zobrazováni v českých a britských online médiích, např. v online zpravodajství, a porovnat jejich obrazy. Analýza vychází z přístupu kritické diskurzní analýzy, podle návrhu Teuna van Dijka, který se zaměřuje na moc projevující se v diskurzu silných skupin a předpokládá, že rozdíly v moci mezi silnými a slabými skupinami se odrážejí v diskurzních strukturách, jako jsou titulky, implikace, metafory, presupozice, lexikální výrazy a pasivní inkluzivní struktura věty. Hypotéza předpokládá, že česká média jsou stále velmi konzervativní v zobrazování kontroverzních témat, zatímco britská budou mít více rozmanitý postoj. Význam této studie je zásadní, neboť analýza byla provedena během června 2022, tedy v posledním Pride měsíci, a slouží jako aktuální a relevantní příspěvek do oblasti kritické analýzy diskurzu a queer reprezentace. Výsledky analýzy ukázaly, že britské i české noviny prezentují komunitu pozitivním jazykem, přičemž české noviny se odlišují tím, že neposkytují žádný prostor pro prezentaci či využití jejich hlasu, což potvrzuje úvodní hypotézu.
