Magic and Richness of Joanne Harris´s Narrative Prose

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá románovou trilogií Čokoláda (Chocolat), Ostružinové víno (Blackberry Wine) a Pět dílků pomeranče (Five Quarters of the Orange) od současné britské autorky Joanne Harrisové, často řazené mezi magické realisty. Důraz je v této práci kladen na autorčinu schopnost zachytit a reflektovat současnou podobu světa, zejména pomocí charakterizace postav a jejich symbolického významu. Také prostředí, v němž se romány odehrávají, se tedy stává diskutovaným prvkem v rámci všech částí trilogie. Základní cíl této práce však spočívá v analýze autorčina unikátního pojetí magična a nadpřirozena, kterými jsou všechny tři romány protknuty. Autorčin přístup k magičnu, vnímanému a přítomnému v každodennosti našeho života, představuje spolu s motivy přírody a její moci nad životy jednotlivců klíčový faktor atraktivity a oblíbenosti této autorky. Tato diplomová práce se dále zabývá autorčinou důmyslnou volbou jídla, jakožto zprostředkovatele magična, a také její hlubokou znalostí umění přípravy pokrmů, kterou zdědila po svých francouzských předcích.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the food-trilogy novels Chocolat, Blackberry Wine and Five Quarters of the Orange written by a contemporary British writer Joanne Harris, often categorised among the magic realists. The emphasis of the thesis is concentrated on the overall ability of the writer to capture the reflection of the contemporary world by ways of the depiction of the characters and the symbolic values they represent. Also, the importance of the settings in the framework of the three novels is discussed. The principle aim of the thesis, however, rests in the analysis of the writer's unique concept of the magic and the supernatural, with which the three novels are interwoven. Harris's approach towards the magic, perceived and present in the everyday aspects of our lives, represents, alongside with the motifs of nature and its role in the lives of individuals, the key factor of the attractiveness and popularity of the writer today. The thesis also investigates Harris's choice of food, representing a magic mediator, and her deep knowledge of the art of food preparation inherited from her French ancestors.
