The 19th-Century Narcissus: A Psychoanalytic Study of Oscar Wilde's Dorian Gray

Anotace:

Cílem této magisterské práce je podat komplexní psychoanalytický rozbor hlavního hrdiny románu Oscara Wilda Obraz Doriana Graye založený na teoriích Carla Gustava Junga a Jacquesa Lacana. Práce nejprve představuje podstatu psychoanalytické literární kritiky, načež následují Lacanovy teorie stádia zrcadla a registrů reálna, imaginárna a symbolična s Jungovou teorií psychických funkcí, z nichž práce čerpá během své následné analýzy Doriana Graye. Praktická část analyzuje Dorianovy psychické funkce a zároveň zkoumá souhru výše zmíněných psychoanalytických prvků, přičemž ilustruje, že nevyváženost jeho psychických funkcí, neschopnost Lorda Henryho seznámit jej se symbolickými zákony, jakož i rozpory mezi imaginárnem a symboličnem následně vedou k Dorianově psychóze a sebezáhubě.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to provide a complex psychoanalytic insight into the protagonist of Oscar Wilde’s novel The Picture of Dorian Gray with the aid of the theories developed by Carl Gustav Jung and Jacques Lacan. The thesis first introduces the field of psychoanalytic literary criticism, followed by Lacan’s theories of the mirror stage, the Real, the Imaginary, and the Symbolic, and Jung’s theory of psychological functions. These theories will subse-quently be applied to the analysis of Dorian Gray. The analytical part concentrates on Do-rian’s psychological functions and on the interplay of the aforementioned psychic ele-ments, demonstrating that the imbalance of his psychological functions, the failure of Lord Henry to acquaint Dorian with the symbolic Law, as well as the tension between the Imag-inary and the Symbolic eventually lead to Dorian’s psychosis and annihilation.
