Sci-Fi as a Popular Genre in the Selected Novels of Anglo-American Authors

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá literárním žánrem science fiction, který je nedílnou součástí moderní kultury. Přesněji řečeno, práce zkoumá vědecko-fantastický literární žánr s cílem identifikovat jeho charakteristické žánrové prvky a klasické motivy. Práce také sleduje historický vývoj tohoto žánru s přihlédnutím k případným rozdílům mezi anglickou a americkou kulturou. Hlavním cílem této práce je dokázat, že vědecko-fantastický umělecký žánr zahrnuje i díla, která mohou být považována za kvalitní literaturu zabývající se vážnými a kulturně relevantními tématy. Jelikož jsou to právě angličtí a američtí spisovatelé, kteří dominují na světovém poli science fiction, práce obsahuje analýzu čtyř vybraných anglo-amerických literárních textů (vědecko-fantastické prózy): CLARKE, A. C. 2001: Vesmírná odysea (1968); POHL, F. Gateway (1977); WELLS, H. G. Válka světů (1898); WYNDHAM, J. Den Trifidů (1951).

Abstract:

This master´s thesis examines the science fiction genre which is an integral part of the present-day literary culture. To be more precise, the thesis analyses the field of science fiction literature in order to identify its generic characteristics and its basic themes.The thesis also studies the historical development of this genre, considering the potential differences between the American and English cultures. The point which is heatedly discussed is whether SF literature belongs among the popular mainstream or serious literature. The main aim of the thesis is to prove that the science fiction literature includes a number of novels which can be categorized as quality literatures, dealing with serious and culturally relevant issues. As the field of science fiction genre is dominated by American and English writers, the thesis analyses the following Anglo-American novels; CLARKE, A. C. 2001: Space Odyssey (1968); POHL, F. Gateway (1977); WELLS, H. G. The War of the Worlds (1898); WYNDHAM, J. The Day of the Triffids (1951).
