The Significance of Art Competitions for Artists and the Influence They Have on Developments in Art

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá tématem výtvarných soutěží a jejich vnímáním z pozice umělců, kteří se jich účastnili. Jádrem práce jsou proto rozhovory s autory (Martin Mainer, Filip Dvořák, Hynek Martinec, Michal Ožibko, Jan Mikulka a Pavel Vašíček), jejichž prostřednictvím komentuje českou výtvarnou scénu, výtvarné soutěže a potřeby médií k prezentaci umělce. Práce představí nejvýznamnější české, ale i zahraniční soutěže, se zaměřením na médium malby. V českém prostředí se soustředí na Cenu Jindřicha Chalupeckého, která je vnímána širokou veřejností a mediálně nejvíce reflektována. Podrobněji se zabývá mezinárodní BP Portrait Award, která se koná jednou ročně pod záštitou National Portrait Gallery v Londýně. Okrajově jsou zde zahrnuty další zahraniční soutěže jako je například španělská soutěž Figurativas Painting and Sculpture Competitions, britská Turner Prize a soutěže, které vyhlašuje Royal Society of Painting v Londýně. Práce se zabývá nejen otázkou významu výtvarných soutěží pro umělce a jejich vlivem na umělecké dění. Poukazuje na otázky ohledně objektivity poroty, vlivu médií, ale také převládání podpory mladého umění. Z tohoto důvodu nejsou vynechány ani soutěže pro studenty a čerstvé absolventy výtvarných oborů, jako je například Cena kritiky pro mladou malbu, projekt Start up, který pořádá Galerie hlavního města Prahy nebo cena EXIT, kterou vyhlašuje formou bienále Fakulta umění a designu na Univerzitě Jana Evangelisty Purkyně v Ústí nad Labem. Protipólem k několika cenám, soutěžím a projektům pro mladé a začínající umělce je zde zmíněn počin Umělec má cenu, který vznikl z potřeby upozornit na umělce, kteří přesáhli třicet pět let a jsou pro mladší generaci autoritou. Práce vychází z autentických pramenů a jejich následné analýzy. Z etických důvodů je zde zastoupena kapitola věnovaná metodice, která se zabývá orální historií.

Abstract:

My dissertation focuses on the theme of art competitions and how they are perceived from the viewpoint of the artists who take part in them. For this reason, the dissertation is principally based on interviews with individual artists (Martin Mainer, Filip Dvořák Hynek Martinec, Michal Ožibko, Jan Mikulka and Pavel Vašíček) through which it provides a commentary on the Czech art scene, the perception and meaning of art competitions and the necessity of using the media to present an artist's work. The dissertation deals with the most important art competitions, both in the Czech Republic and other countries. In the Czech context it focuses on the Jindřich Chalupecký Award, the art prize that is most widely recognised and discussed by the public and media in this country. It assesses in similar detail the international BP Portrait Award that is held annually under the auspices of the National Portrait Gallery in London. Other national competitions featured in less depth are the Spanish Figurativas Painting and Sculpture Competition, the British Turner Prize and the competition held by the Royal Society of Painting in London. The dissertation doesn't just focus on the issue of art competitions' significance for artists and the influence they have on developments in art, but also highlights issues concerning the objectivity of juries, media influence, though also the predominance of support for young art. For this reason the dissertation doesn't overlook competitions for students and fresh art college graduates such as Critic´s Award for young painting, Startup held by the Prague City Gallery and the EXIT award held in the form of a biennial by the Faculty of Art and Design of Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem. It also mentions the project The Artist Is Valuable, a counterpoint to several awards, competitions and projects for young and emerging artists that was created out of the need to highlight artists older than 35 who represent an authority in the eyes of the younger generation. This dissertation is based on authentic sources and their subsequent analysis. For ethical reasons it also includes a chapter devoted to methodology dealing with oral history.
