Numerical integration-orthogonal polynomials

Abstract:

Hlavním tématem bakalářské práce jsou ortogonální polynomy a jejich využití při numerické integraci. První kapitola se věnuje historii ortogonálních polynomů. Ve druhé kapitole jsou definice, které jsou základem pro zbytek této práce. Ve třetí kapitole se věnujeme aproximaci funkcí a také ukazujeme, proč je v praxi užitečné aproximovat funkce pomocí polynomů. Čtvrtá kapitola se již věnuje hlavnímu tématu, kterým jsou ortogonální polynomy. Nejprve je zde popsána Gramova-Schmidtova ortogonalizace, díky které následně odvozujeme rekurentní vztah pro ortogonální polynomy. Nakonec jsou zde uvedeny některé speciální příklady ortogonálních polynomů. Pátá kapitola je věnována využití ortogonálních polynomů při numerické integraci. Je v ní vyslovena hlavní věta o Gaussově kvadratuře. Poté jsou zde ukázány některé speciální případy Gaussovy kvadratury. V poslední kapitole je řešeno několik příkladů, abychom ukázali některé vlastnosti Gaussovy kvadratury a její využití.

Abstract:

The main topic of this bachelor thesis is orthogonal polynomials and their utilization in numerical integration. The first chapter is about history of orthogonal polynomials. In the second chapter there are basic definitions, which are fundamental for the rest of this thesis. Then in the third chapter we pursue approximation of functions and then we show, why is in praxis useful to approximate functions by polynomials. The fourth chapter is about the main topic, the orthogonal polynomials. At first we formulate the Gram-Schmidt ortogonalization and then we use it to deduce recurrence relations of orthogonal polynomials. In conclusion we state some special examples of orthogonal polynomials. The fifth chapter is about the utilization of orthogonal polynomials in numerical integration. There is formulated the main theorem about the Gaussian quadrature in it. Then we show some special types of Gaussian quadrature. In the last chapter we solve several exercises to show some properties of Gaussian quadrature and the utilization of it.
