Illness as a Metaphor in A. Morales' The Rag Doll Plagues, N. S. Momaday's House Made of Dawn and L. M. Silko's Ceremony

Abstract:

The first part of this diploma thesis aims to give an outline of the history and position of one of the USA?s state, New Mexico, together with the question of the current situation and the status of Hispanic people in America. Further the text tries to give an overview concerning the lives of Native Americans especially with the focus on their recent lives and position within American society. The metaphor of illness represents a crucial part of my work. This central metaphor reflects the feelings of those people whose pride as well as whose dignity have been afflicted. Analyzing the books written by Alejandro Morales, Leslie Marmon Silko and Navarre Scott Momaday I attempt to walk in the lives of those people and I try to reveal the meaning of their illnesses. Despair that the characters feel together with indifference and hatred they have to face represents the path to their sickness. I went through the books and I focused on the metaphor of illness in each book separately to come up with the understanding of all meanings this metaphor stands for. The end of my thesis deals with rather provoking vision concerning the future of our society. Is our civilization really facing its downfall?

První část této diplomové práce si klade za cíl poskytnout přehled historie a postavení amerického státu Nové Mexiko, spolu s otázkou současné situace hispánských obyvatel Ameriky a jejich postavení v americké společnosti. Dále se pokouším podat výpověď o současné situaci původních obyvatel Ameriky, a to především o jejich současném postavení a životě v americké společnosti. Metafora nemoci představuje klíčovou část mé práce. Tato centrální metafora odráží pocity lidí, jejichž hrdost stejně jako jejich důstojnost byly zraněny. Studiem knih Alejadra Moralese, Leslie Marmon Silkové a Navarre Scott Momadaye se pokouším nahlédnout do životů těchto lidí a odhalit význam jejich nemocí. Zoufalství, které postavy cítí, spolu s lhostejností a záští, které jsou nuceny čelit, představuje klíč k jejich onemocnění. V práci jsem se zaměřila na každou knihu jednotlivě, abych tak lépe vysvětlila všechny významy, které tato centrální metafora obsahuje. Závěr práce se zabývá poněkud provokativní vizí týkající se budoucnosti naší společnosti. Čelí naše civilizace skutečně zániku?
