Impact of the Negative Interest Rates on the Performance of Selected Central Banks in 2002-2020

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá aktuální problematikou záporných úrokových sazeb s cílem analyzovat jejich dopad na výkonnost, tj. zisk nebo ztrátu, dánské, evropské, švýcarské, švédské, norské, japonské a maďarské centrální banky za sledované období 2002–2020. Primárním zdrojem dat sloužící k vyhodnocení hypotézy a tvorbě časových řad jsou účetní závěrky vybraných centrálních bank. Práce tak řeší a rozvíjí oblast hospodaření centrálních bank, jenž je v odborné literatuře věnována malá pozornost. Výsledky výzkumu potvrzují stanovenou hypotézu. Nicméně na výkonnost centrálních bank v případě implementace záporné úrokové sazby má významný vliv struktura aktiv a pasiv spolu se strukturou výnosů a nákladů. Nelze tak pozitivní dopad na hospodaření centrálních bank předem souhrnně unifikovat.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with current issues of negative interest rates in order to analyze their impact on performance, i.e. profit or loss, Danish, European, Swiss, Swedish, Norwegian, Japanese and Hungarian central banks for the period 2002-2020. The primary source of data used to evaluate the hypothesis and create time series are the financial statements of selected central banks. The work thus addresses and develops the area of central bank management, which is given little attention in the literature. The results of the research confirm the established hypothesis. However, the performance of central banks in the event of the implementation of a negative interest rate is significantly affected by the structure of assets and liabilities together with the structure of income and expenses. Thus, the overall positive impact on the performance of central banks cannot be unified in advance.
