Expertise in the Czech energy industry: A field analysis

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je prozkoumání charakteristik českého energetického expertního pole. Za tímto účelem bylo využito datového souboru sestaveného z veřejně dostupných dat a jeho analýza pomocí konceptu pole Pierra Bourdieua. Charakterizace pole byla z hlediska individuálních atributů provedena pomocí standardní popisné statistiky. Poté bylo využito analýzy sociálních sítí, která byla použita za účelem zachycení společné účasti na konferencích a indikovala vztahové struktury v rámci pole. Výsledky poukazují, na dominanci expertů ze soukromé sféry s vazbami na inkumbentní aktéry. Navíc vykazuje nadměrné zastoupení mužů a technického vzdělání.

Abstract:

This research explores the Czech energy expert field characteristics. It uses a dataset compiled from publicly available sources which is analysed by using Bourdieu’s concept of field. To that end, standard descriptive statistics are applied to characterise the field in terms of the experts’ individual attributes and social network analysis is used to capture the experts’ conference co-occurrences indicating relational structure of the field. The results show that the field is dominated by the experts from the private sphere affiliated mostly to incumbent actors and exhibits an over-representation of men with technical education.
