Gold-MSI: Adaptation of Goldsmiths Musical Sophistication Index and its utilization in teaching practice

Abstract:

Hudební psychologie je obor na pomezí hudební vědy a psychologie a zabývá se studiem hudebního chování a prožívání. Ve světě již tento obor prošel jistým vývojem, ovšem v České republice se jím nezabývá mnoho badatelů, a proto je zde nedostatek psychodiagnostických nástrojů. Tato diplomová práce se zaměřuje na adaptaci již existujícího britského testu Gold-MSI určeného pro širokou veřejnost, který měří tzv. všeobecnou hudebnost (v originále The Goldsmiths Musical Sophistication Index). Byl proveden obousměrný překlad testu s ohledem na jazykové a kulturní odlišnosti české populace. Celý proces byl konzultován s autory testu, psychology, hudebníky i zástupci laické veřejnosti. V rámci pilotní studie se potvrdily dobré psychometrické vlastnosti dotazníku a některé souvislosti subškál s osobnostními rysy modelu Big Five. Následně jsou uvedeny možnosti využití testu Gold-MSI v pedagogické praxi. Předkládaná adaptace se může stát základem pro jeho normování v české populaci.

Abstract:

Musical psychology is a scientific discipline which draws from musicology and psychology and studies musical behavior and experience. It is already well-established abroad, but in the Czech Republic there is only a small number of researchers and the field suffers a lack of psychodiagnostic instruments. In this thesis, we performed an adaptation of an existing British questionnaire Gold-MSI for general public. It measures so-called musical sophistication (in the original The Goldsmiths Musical Sophistication Index). Forward and back-translation was performed, with regard to linguistic and cultural differences of Czech population. The whole process was consulted with authors of the test, psychologists and both musicians and non-musicians. Within a pilot study, good psychometric qualities of the questionnaire were confirmed, as well as some correlations of its subscales with Big Five personality traits. Consequently, we present several ways of utilization of the test in teaching practice. The proposed adaptation of the Gold-MSI questionnaire may become the foundation for its future standardization in Czech population.
