Absence of the father in upbringing and the association with attitudes and values towards fatherhood and manhood in adolescent boys

Abstract:

Tato kvalitativní studie zkoumala souvislost absence otce ve výchově s postoji a hodnotami k otcovství a mužství u dospívajících chlapců. Strukturované rozhovory s 30 chlapci ve věku 14-15 let zkoumaly výpovědi o ideálních figurách otce a muže a s nimi spojená témata. Tematická analýza odhalila, že chlapci spojovali s těmito ideály zejména péči o rodinu, a hlavně o děti, potřebu chození do práce či finančního příjmu a nutnou nepřítomnost sklonů k násilí a závislostem. Tyto závěry přispívají k rozšíření poznatků v této nepříliš probádané oblasti vnímání otcovství a mužství u dospívajících chlapců a nabízejí možné srovnání s předcházejícími zjištěními v této oblasti, čímž vytvářejí také podklad pro další výzkumy.

Abstract:

This qualitative study examined the association of father absence in parenting with attitudes and values toward fatherhood and manhood in adolescent boys. Structured interviews with 30 boys aged 14-15 years explored statements about ideal father figures and men and related themes. Thematic analysis revealed that boys associated family care and especially child care, the need to go to work or have a financial income, and the necessary absence of tendencies towards violence and addiction with these ideals. These findings add to the body of knowledge in this understudied area of adolescent boys' perceptions of fatherhood and manhood and offer a possible comparison with previous findings in this area, thus also providing a basis for further research.
