Czechoslovak legionnaires in France Company Nazdar

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to research the topic of Company Nazdar, the first company composed only by Czech volunteers in France during the Great War. The thesis is divided into two parts, the theoretical and the practical part. In the first part of the thesis Czech traces before the outbreak of war are described, mainly the Czech organisations in Paris. Also the main causes of the outbreak of war are addressed, which is connected to another theme, the mobilization in France. In the next chapter we discuss all the major events of Company Nazdar from its formation and military training in Bayonne through the first service in Champagne up to the famous battle in Artois on 9th of May 1915 for the peak of Vimy. This battle was in fact a milestone in the life of Company Nazdar because after that the company was disintegrated. In the practical part we discover the life story of a member of the Company Nazdar, Jan Štafl, which is based on the interview with one of his relatives. In this part we have an opportunity to find out more about his noteworthy life journey from the period before the Great War up to his old age. The aim of this bachelor thesis was to give a complex overview of the history of Company Nazdar, to commemorate its hundredth anniversary from the disintegration and to remind that the Company Nazdar played a significant role in the formation of the next Czech units in France.

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá Rotou Nazdar, tedy první rotou složenou českými dobrovolníky ve Francii během první světové války. Se zaměřením přímo na Rotu Nazdar je práce rozdělena na část teoretickou a část praktickou. Bakalářská práce začíná představením české stopy ve Francii před vypuknutím války, zejména utvořených organizací seskupujících Čechy v Paříži. Následně se práce zaobírá vypuknutím války a jejími příčinami, což je úzce spjato s navazujícím tématem, mobilizace ve Francii. V další kapitole bakalářské práce je zmapována celá historie Roty Nazdar od jejího zformování a vojenského výcviku v Bayonne, přes první nasazení na frontě v Champagne až po slavné boje v Artois 9. května 1915 na kótě 140, kde Rota Nazdar fakticky zanikla. Praktická část je zaměřena na život jednoho z členů slavné Roty Nazdar Jana Štafla, která je založena na autentické výpovědi jednoho z pozůstalých členů rodiny. V této části má čtenář možnost blíže poznat život Jana Štafla, jeho zajímavou životní cestu začínající v předválečném období až do útlého stáří. Tato práce má především poskytnout komplexní pohled na historii Roty Nazdar a připomenout její památku ke stému výročí jejího rozpadu, neb tato rota sehrála významnou roli pro formování dalších československých jednotek ve Francii.
