Factors of University Students' Academic Performance

Abstract:

Předkládaná magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá mapováním faktorů akademické úspěšnosti vysokoškolských studentů. V prvních kapitolách se práce věnuje jednotlivým faktorům akademické úspěšnosti, jež jsou rozděleny do tří částí – psychologické faktory zahrnující kognitivní a nonkognitivní faktory, dále sociální a situační faktory. Empirická část je založena na kvantitativní analýze dat získaných subjektivním percipováním sledovaných faktorů studenty Masarykovy univerzity (N=353) na základě vytvořeného dotazníku. V rámci vytyčení sledovaných faktorů akademické úspěšnosti bylo faktorovou analýzou extrahováno devět hlavních. Korelační analýzou a zjištěním rozdílů v úrovni akademické úspěšnosti byly získány vztahy mezi jednotlivými proměnnými (pohlaví studenta, jeho věk, výška studovaného ročníku a skutečnost, zda se student věnuje jednomu nebo více oborům současně) se sledovanými faktory akademické úspěšnosti i samotnou akademickou úspěšností. Zjišťován byl také vztah pozorovaných faktorů a přímé akademické úspěšnosti reprezentované studijním percentilem. Analýza dat potvrdila částečně existující vztah mezi sledovanými faktory a akademickou úspěšností. Čtyři z devíti faktorů se ukázaly jako statisticky významné – aktivita, motivace, zájem o studium; soutěživost, ambice; svědomitost, pečlivost, neprokrastinace; vliv prostředí na motivaci ke studiu. Vztah jednotlivých proměnných k akademické úspěšnosti se prokázat nepodařilo, ovšem jisté souvislosti mezi zmíněnými proměnnými a faktory tvořícími akademickou úspěšnost studentů byly potvrzeny.

Abstract:

In the presented master thesis, factors of university students’ academic performance were researched. The first part of the thesis describes academic performance factors divided into those of psychological basis, including cognitive and noncognitive factors, and also those of social and situational basis. Empirical part is based on quantitative data analysis. Analyzed data were collected thanks to questionnaire made for the purpose of this research. Questionnaire aimed on subjective perception of observed factors by Masaryk university students (N=353). Factor analysis was used to extract those ones that can represent majority of all observed. Factors for further researched were in the end reduced to nine. With the use of correlation analysis and difference comparison analysis in the level of academic performance, connections between observed variables (including student gender, age, study year and the fact if student studies one or more study programs simultaneously) and factors of academic performance were researched. The influence of mentioned variables on the very academic performance was researched as well. The connection between observed factors and students’ academic performance represented by study percentile was found out. Data analysis confirmed partly existing relation between observed factors and academic performance. Four of nine factors showed as statistically significant – activity, motivation, focus on study; competitiveness, ambition; conscientiousness, nonprocrastination; environment influence to motivation to study. Statistically significant relations between particular variables and academic performance were not found but some connections between mentioned variables and factors that create students’ academic performance were confirmed.
