Abstract:

Práce zkoumá obraz dětství, rodičovství a manželství v románech A Home at the End of the World (česky Domov na konci světa v roce 2005), Flesh and Blood, The Hours (česky Hodiny v roce 2002) a By Nightfall (česky Za soumraku v roce 2011) Michaela Cunninghama. Jelikož Cunningham zachycuje dojmy, myšlenky a emoce svých postav velmi podrobně, práce se je pokouší (psycho)analyzovat za pomocí poznatků Sigmunda Freuda. Vliv jednotlivcovy pozice v jeho rodině na jeho vnímání a uvažování je také jedním z předmětů bádání. Práce se dále zabývá spojitostmi mezi Cunninghamovým a Freudovým pojetím jednotlivce a jeho vztahu k rodině, zkušenostmi z dětství, výchovou, názory a postoji rodičů a jejich vlivem na jedincův další život. Obsažena je také studie tradičních i alternativních rodinných seskupení. Práce se zaměřuje na výměny rolí, kteréžto zpochybňují chápání rodinných rolí jako stálých a neměnných. Příčiny a důsledky těchto výměn rolí jsou také předmětem zájmu. Výměny rolí přehodnocují samotnou podstatu rodinných rolí a umožňují nám tak pohlížet na tyto role konkrétněji a zároveň z různých úhlů. Práce sleduje určitá schémata, která jsou patrná v Cunninghamově pojetí rodinného života. Jedná se například o popis dětství mužských, spíše než ženských protagonistů, dále o vztah matek k jejich synům nebo také mnohem častější přítomnost matek než otců během jedincova dětství

Abstract:

The thesis examines Michael Cunningham's portrayal of childhood, parenthood, and marriage in A Home at the End of the World, Flesh and Blood, The Hours, and By Nightfall. Since Cunningham captures his characters' thoughts, emotions, and impressions in great detail, the thesis attempts to (psycho)analyze them with the help of Sigmund Freud's findings. The impact of an individual's family role on his/her perceiving and reasoning is also explored. The connections between Cunningham's and Freud's notions of an individual and his/her relation to his/her family; childhood experiences, upbringing, the attitudes of a character's parents and their influence on an individual's further life are discussed. The study of both the traditional and alternative families depicted in the novels is also provided. The thesis focuses on the role reversals which challenge the notion of the family roles as stable and rigid. Furthermore, the causes as well as consequences of these reversals are examined. The role reversals question the very substance of the family roles and help us to look at an individual's position within his/her family more specifically and from different angles. The thesis traces certain patterns observable within Cunningham's portrayal of family life: his dealing of the childhood of the male, rather than the female protagonists; the relationship between the mothers and their sons; or the predominant presence of the mothers and absence of fathers during an individual's childhood.
