Integration of a river and waterfront into the life and background of a city

Abstract:

Diplomová práce na téma ZAČLENĚNÍ ŘEKY A NÁBŘEŽÍ DO ŽIVOTA A OBRAZU MĚSTA se zabývá problematikou vztahu mezi člověkem, řekou a městem v obecné rovině, ale také studiem konkrétních příkladů řešení nábřežních prostor ve městech, možnostmi jejich úprav a začleněním řeky do organismu města. Na základě studia dané problematiky jsou zobecněny možné přístupy a východiska v tvorbě nábřeží, které jsou základním východiskem a podkladem pro studii nábřeží. Tyto principy jsou prověřeny na konkrétním zadání.Cílem diplomové práce je zpracování architektonického návrhu možného řešení vybraného nábřeží na úrovni ideové architektonické studie. Vybraným modelovým územím je nábřeží řeky Ostravice v centru Ostravy, a to v úseku od soutoku Ostravice s Lučinou po městský park Komenského sady. Ostravice vytváří linii, která spojuje významná místa, jako je Slezskoostravský hrad, centrum města a Komenského sady. Výsledný koncept rozděluje nábřeží na čtyři části, které reagují právě na významná místa u řeky, na přilehlou krajinu a funkční využití okolí řeky. Koncept nábřeží není pojednán pouze jako spojnice některých bodů. Ostravice je vnímána jako významný přírodní prvek, který si pamatuje a dokládá „černou“ historii Ostravy. Postindustriální charakter je pro město specifický, proto v návrhu není potlačován, ale je chápán jako důležitá součást průmyslové minulosti Ostravy.

Abstract:

The thesis, focused on INTEGRATION OF A RIVER AND WATERFRONT INTO THE LIFE AND BACKGROUND OF A CITY, covers a problematic relation between a man, river and a city generally, but it also studies specific examples of waterfront areas in cities, possibilities of their modification, and integration of the river into the city. Based on studies dealing with the topic, the possible approaches and solutions for construction of a waterfront are generalized, and used as a basis and groundwork for the study of the waterfront. The basis is then verified with the specific assignment.The aim of the thesis is to design an architectural plan, which presents a possible approach to a construction of the specific waterfront, considered as an ideological architectural study. The chosen area is the waterfront alongside the Ostravice river in the city centre of Ostrava, specifically it is an area delimited by the city park Komenského sady, and the point where the Ostravice river meets the Lučina river.The Ostravice represents a connection between significant sites of the city, like Silesian Ostrava castle, the city centre and the city park Komenského sady. The final design is divided into four parts, each dedicated to one of the significant sites by the river, its surroundings and effective use of the riverside. However, the design of the waterfront is not considered just as a connection. The Ostravice river is an important natural element, which represents a commemoration of “black” history of Ostrava. Besides, it is the postindustrial character which makes the city distinctive, therefore the design respects it and reflects it as a part of industrial history of Ostrava.
