Analysis of the influence of costume design in popular films of the 21st century on current fashion trends

Abstract:

Abstrakt Předmětem zkoumání této bakalářské práce je kostýmní výtvarnictví a jeho propojení s módou. Hlavním cílem práce je určení toho, jaký přínos mělo kostýmní výtvarnictví v populárních filmech 21. století na současné módní trendy. V teoretické části jsou uvedeny informace o módě a filmovém kostýmovém designu, kde je důraz kladen na vliv konkrétních snímků a filmových celebrit. Dále je v práci realizována případová studie, která je zaměřena na analýzu pěti vybraných filmů. Jimi jsou Matrix (1999), Charlie's Angels (2000), Velký Gatsby (2013), Duna (2021) a Barbie (2023). Z ní vyplynulo, že mohou filmové kostýmy pronikat do módního světa a přetrvávat jako módní trend delší dobu. To se projevilo trendem na dlouhé kabáty a malé sluneční brýle z filmu Matrix, popularitou večírků v stylu Gatsbyho, vznikem stylu Y2K na základě oblečení hlavních hrdinek Charlie’s Angels, propojením praktických a estetických funkcí oblečení jako ve filmu Duna a také vznikem tzv. barbiecoru. Výsledky případové studie potvrdilo dotazníkové šetření s účastí 31 respondentů, které ukázaly, že kultovní filmy a ikonické postavy ovlivňují vnímání módy a mohou způsobit změny stylu oblékání široké veřejnosti. Více než polovina respondentů si často všímá filmových kostýmů, což ukazuje na jejich vysokou hodnotu z pohledu formování vizuální estetiky. V poslední době měli podle dotázaných nejvýraznější kostýmy hrdiny filmů Duna (2021), Poor Things (2023) a seriálu Bridgerton (2020).

Abstract:

The subject of this bachelor thesis is costume design and its connection with fashion. The main goal of the thesis is to determine the contribution of costume design in popular films of the 21st century to current fashion trends. The theoretical part contains information about fashion and film costume design, where the emphasis is on the influence of specific images and film celebrities. Furthermore, a case study is carried out in the work, which is focused on the analysis of five selected films. They are The Matrix (1999), Charlie's Angels (2000), The Great Gatsby (2013), Dune (2021) and Barbie (2023). It showed that movie costumes can penetrate the fashion world and remain a fashion trend for a long time. This was reflected in the trend for long coats and small sunglasses from the movie Matrix, the popularity of Gatsby-style parties, the emergence of the Y2K style based on the clothing of the main characters of Charlie's Angels, the linking of practical and aesthetic functions of clothing as in the movie Dune, and also the emergence of the so-called barbiecor. The results of the case study were confirmed by a questionnaire survey with the participation of 31 respondents, which showed that cult films and iconic characters influence the perception of fashion and can cause changes in the general public's dressing style. More than half of the respondents often notice movie costumes, which indicates their high value from the point of view of shaping visual aesthetics. Recently, according to those interviewed, the heroes of the films Dune (2021), Poor Things (2023) and the series Bridgerton (2020) had the most distinctive costumes.
