Positivity of polynomials including school context

Abstract:

Rozklad polynomu na součet čtverců polynomů (zkr. SOS) představuje jednu z klasických metod, jak dokázat, že je jistý polynom f pozitivně semidefinitní. Jedná se o způsob důkazu úzce související se 17. Hilbertovým problémem předneseným Davidem Hilbertem v rámci přednášky Problémy matematiky na 2. mezinárodním kongresu matematiků v Paříži v roce 1900. V současné době se ovšem jedná o problematiku, která není obvykle vyučována na českých středních školách, ani v kurzech (počítačové) algebry v rámci přípravy učitelů matematiky a/nebo informatiky na pedagogických fakultách. Rozklad samotný může být přitom v případě polynomů jedné neurčité jednoduchou záležitostí a může se jednat o techniku, kterou mohou využít řešitelé matematických olympiád. Opačným případem jsou polynomy vyšších stupňů ve více neurčitých, při jejichž řešení se neobejdeme bez výpočetní techniky a matematického softwaru. Díky tomuto softwaru je možné nahlížet na klasické problémy nekonvenčním-inovativním způsobem optikou počítačových technologií a řešit úlohy, které by svým rozsahem byly v minulosti takřka neřešitelné. Kognitivní technologie nám navíc umožňují náročnější pasáže této problematiky a abstraktní pojmy přiblížit i studentům středních škol a současným učitelům na základních a středních školách. Disertační práce je proto věnována nejen vymezení daného problému (vč. historických souvislostí), možnostem jeho řešení a obecným matematickým algoritmům, ale je též zaměřena na možnosti užití matematického softwaru a obecně výpočetní techniky při určování rozkladu reálného polynomu na součet čtverců polynomů. Poukazuje na limity lidských výpočtů, ale i těch realizovaných s využitím obvyklého školského vybavení. Sada podrobně řešených příkladů s postupně rostoucí úrovní náročnosti od středoškolských úloh po problémy obtížně řešitelné i s využitím počítače, pak navíc dává možnost (nejen) studentům princip rozkladu na SOS, jeho dílčí kroky i jistá omezení lépe pochopit.

Abstract:

Decomposition of a polynomial as a Sum of squares of polynomials (SOS) is one of the classical method how to prove that certain polynomial f is a positive semidefinite polynomial. This is a way of proof that is closely related to the 17th Hilbert problem. David Hilbert defined this problem in his lecture Mathematical Problems at the 2nd International Congress of Mathematicians in Paris in 1900. At present, this is a technique that is not usually taught at Czech high schools or in (Computer) Algebra courses in the preparation of mathematics and/or computer science teachers at the faculties of education. In the case of polynomials of one variable, sum of squares decomposition could be a simple problem and this technique could be used by mathematical olympics solvers. The opposite case represents higher degree polynomials in multiple variables. Here we cannot solve the problem without computer technology and mathematical software. Thanks to this software, it is possible to look at the classical problems in an innovative way through the optics of computer technologies, and it is possible to solve problems which were almost impossible to solve in the past. Through the cognitive technologies, we can also bring near the more difficult parts of this issue and more abstract concepts to high school students and teachers at elementary and high schools. This dissertation thesis is therefore devoted not only to the definition of the problem (including historical context), the possibilities of its solution and general mathematical algorithms, but is also focused on the possibilities of using mathematical software and computer technology in general in the sums of squares decomposition of real polynomials. The work points to the limits of human calculations, but also those realized using the usual school equipment. A set of solved problems with a gradually increasing level of difficulty from high school tasks to problems that are difficult to solve even with the use of a computer, then they also give students (not only) the principle of SOS decomposition, its partial steps and certain limitations to better understand.
