The Meaning of Security in a Socially Excluded Locality

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce se zabývá významem bezpečnosti v sociálně vyloučené lokalitě. Klade si otázku, co bezpečnosti znamená pro lidi žijící v jedné z nich, v lokalitě Havířov-Šumbark. Teoreticky, metodologicky a eticko-politicky je ukotvena v kritických bezpečnostních studiích, respektive ve vernakulárních bezpečnostních studiích, která pod tento projekt spadají. Současně čerpá ze symbolické antropologie a její poststrukturalistické kritiky, stejně jako poststrukturalistické konceptualizace diskurzu, poskytující celému výzkumu ontologický a epistemologický rámec. Výzkum samotný byl realizován pomocí metody (auto)etnografie. Odpověď na výzkumnou otázku tvoří tři doplňující se interpretace konstrukce bezpečnosti v analyzovaném diskurzu: realistická, symbolická a dramaturgická. Na jejich základě je pak demonstrován přínos studia bezpečnosti z pohledu „obyčejných“ lidí, jenž spočívá v konfrontaci dominantních významů bezpečnosti.

Abstract:

This thesis engages with the meaning of security in a socially excluded locality. In this respect, it asks the question of what security means for the people living in one of these areas, the locality of Havířov-Šumbark. Theoretically, methodologically, and ethico-politically the thesis is grounded in critical security studies, or, more precisely, in vernacular security studies that come under the critical project. At the same time, it draws on symbolic anthropology and its post-structuralist critique, as well as post-structuralist conceptualisation of discourse, providing the research with an ontological and epistemological framework. The research was conducted by means of (auto)ethnography. The answer to the main research question consists of three complementary interpretations of security construction within the analysed discourse: realistic, symbolic, and dramaturgical. On this basis, it is demonstrated that studying security from the perspective of ‘ordinary’ people allows the confrontation of dominant security meanings.
