Realizations of the glottal fricative by Czech learners of English

Abstract:

V angličtině vystupuje foném /h/, jehož znělost se obvykle uvádí jako fonologicky nespecifikovaná, přičemž znělost jeho realizace je podmíněna svým fonetickým prostředím, kdežto v češtině vystupuje foném /?/, jenž se považuje za znělý fonologicky i foneticky. Tento foném má navíc vlastnost šířit svou znělost na předcházející neznělé souhlásky. Tato práce se zabývá výslovností anglického fonému /h/ u českých mluvčích angličtiny a jejím cílem je zhodnotit, do jaké míry se čeští mluvčí přibližují rodilé výslovnosti, existují-li rozdíly mezi oněmi dvěma fonémy i na fonetické úrovni. Z pořízených nahrávek českých a rodilých mluvčích se pomocí funkce Voice Report v programu Praat zkoumala znělost obou fonémů. Z výsledků vyplývá, že čeští mluvčí se v anglických projevech rodilé výslovnosti nepřibližují, ba naopak přejímají vlastnosti českého /?/, konkrétně vyšší znělost, potažmo i vlastnost spouštění asimilace znělosti.

Abstract:

The English phoneme /h/ is said to be phonologically underspecified for voicing and the voicing of its realization to be determined by its phonetic environment. By contrast, the Czech phoneme /?/ is described as voiced both phonologically and phonetically, and it has the property of spreading its voicing over preceding voiceless consonants. This thesis explores the realization of English /h/ in Czech speakers of English. The aim of this work is to investigate the extent to which the theoritical differences between the two phonemes manifest themselves on the phonetic level, and in aspects where they differ substantially, to examine the degree to which Czech speakers approach native-like pronunciation. Recordings of Czech and native English speakers were collected. The recordings were then analyzed for voicing using Voice Report in Praat. The findings indicate that Czech speakers do not approach native-like pronunciation. On the contrary, they transfer the properties of Czech /?/ to English /h/. Apart from more voiced realizations, this may entail the property of triggering voicing assimilation as well.
