Analysis of the impact of long-term unemployment on the mental health of the Czech population

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce je zaměřena na analýzu vztahu dlouhodobé nezaměstnanosti a duševního zdraví obyvatel v jednotlivých krajích České republiky. Duševní zdraví obyvatel je měřeno na základě počtu pacientů léčících se ze závislosti na alkoholu. V praktické části práce jsou odhadnuty tři modely prostřednictvím metody nejmenších čtverců (OLS). Nejprve je vztah dlouhodobé nezaměstnanosti a počtu pacientů odhadován pro obě pohlaví dohromady, následně pro každé pohlaví zvlášť. Na základě těchto modelů lze interpretovat vliv pro jednotlivá pohlaví. Vliv dlouhodobé nezaměstnanosti na počet pacientů léčících se ze závislosti na alkoholu není prokázán, avšak jako statisticky významná proměnná, jenž ovlivňuje duševní zdraví mužů, se projevuje míra nezaměstnanosti. V jednotlivých modelech je jako statisticky významná proměnná vykazována proměnná zastupující vzdělání.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis focuses on the analysis of the relationship between long-term unemployment and mental health of the population in each region of the Czech Republic. The mental health of the population is measured by the number of patients recovering from alcohol addiction. In the empirical part of the thesis, there are three models estimated through the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method. Firstly, the relationship between long-term unemployment and the number of patients is estimated for both sexes together, then for each sexes separately. Based on these models, impact for each gender can be interpreted. There is no evidence of an effect of long-term unemployment on the number of patients recovering from alcohol addiction, but the unemployment rate appears to be a statistically significant variable affecting men's mental health. A variable representing education is reported as a statistically significant variable in each model.
