Geological setting of the south-eastern slopes of Bohemian Massif based on interpretation of petroleum exploration subsurface dataset

Abstract:

Oblast jihovýchodních svahů Českého masivu je situována v místě kontaktu Českého masivu a Západních Karpat v jihovýchodní části České Republiky. Jednotky Českého masivu a jejich sedimentární pokryv jsou zde hluboce pohřbeny pod příkrovy Vnějších Západních Karpat. Tato komplikovaná geologická stavba oblasti zde umožnila vznik značného množství zdrojových hornin a zároveň také struktur vhodných k akumulaci uhlovodíků. Proto se celé území stalo jednou z nejdůležitějších oblastí pro vyhledávání ropy a zemního plynu v České Republice. Bylo zde vyvrtáno několik set hlubokých průzkumných a těžebních vrtů a celá oblast byla pokryta všemi dostupnými geofyzikálními metodami včetně 2D a 3D seismického měření. Předkládaná práce sestává z několika publikací, které jsou z větší či menší části založeny na interpretacích 3D a 2D seismických dat a výsledcích sedimentologických, geochemických a petrografických studií jader a dalšího hmotného materiálu získaného z hlubokých vrtů hloubených pro průzkum ropy a zemního plynu. Jelikož 3D seismická data i většina vrtných dat jsou součástí obchodního tajemství společnosti vlastnící licenční práva k oblasti (MND a.s.), jednalo se většinou o první zveřejnění výsledků interpretací 3D seismických dat z oblasti. Při studiu uhlovodíkového systému jsou většinou hodnoceny všechny dostupné zdrojové horniny oblasti, a proto byly, jako jedna z nejdůležitějších zdrojových hornin mezi prvními hodnoceny také mikulovské slínovce. Byly hodnoceny všechny podstatné parametry této zdrojové horniny a to její plošný rozsah, mocnosti, obsah organického uhlíku, tepelná zralost a petrografie organické hmoty (článek č. 1), ale také mineralogie jílových minerálů obsažených v této hornině v souvislosti s její tepelnou zralostí (článek č. 2). Mezi nejlepší kolektorské horniny pro akumulaci uhlovodíků v této oblasti patří středně jurské grestenské souvrství a nikolčické vrstvy. Proto byla provedena podrobná studie grestenského souvrství na základě sedimentologického zpracování vrtných jader a interpretace 3D seismických dat. V této práci (článek č. 3) bylo nastíněno jejich depoziční prostředí na základě jejich rozdělení do jednotlivých facií a faciálních asociací a stanovena jejich provenience na základě studia těžkých minerálů. Podobná studie vznikla pro nikolčické vrstvy (článek č. 4), kde byla faciální analýza jádrového materiálu podpořena interpretací 3D seismických dat, studiem těžkých minerálů a jejich petrografickým zhodnocením. Posledním publikovaným výstupem z oblasti je komplexní hodnocení namurských sedimentů, které zde z hlediska uhlovodíkového systému tvoří horniny nejen zdrojové, ale také těsnící a ve výjimečných případech také kolektorské. Byl hodnocen jejich rozsah na základě interpretace 3D a 2D seismických dat, ale také jejich petrografie, organická petrografie a jejich vztah ke stejně starým horninám v hornoslezské uhelné pánvi (článek č. 5).

Abstract:

The area of south-eastern slopes of Bohemian Massif is situated in contact zone between the Bohemian Massif and the Western Carpathians in south eastern part of the Czech Republic. As a matter of a fact the Bohemian Massif units and their Mesozoic and Cenozoic Sedimentary Covers are deeply buried here under the thrust units of Outer Western Carpathians. Such complex geological setting provided the conditions for the formation of significant amount of hydrocarbon source rocks, their burial to the depths where the pressures and temperatures are allowing the hydrocarbon generation and migration and simultaneously this geological complexity helped markedly with formation of hydrocarbon traps. Therefore, the whole area became one of the most important hydrocarbon exploration areas in the Czech Republic and its geology was extensively studied. The hundreds of deep wells were drilled here in search for hydrocarbons and in recent past also all possible geophysical methods were used here for study and interpretation of subsurface geology, including the coverage of the area by 2D and 3D seismic acquisitions. The present series of papers is comprehensively covering the results of author‘s interpretations of geology based on those 3D and 2D seismic datasets and the results of sedimentological, geochemical and petrographic studies of cores from deep wells targeting the geological units with high impact for local petroleum system. The results of interpretations of 3D seismic data were published for the first time in these papers (as a part of valuable technical and business secret of MND a.s.) and it is important to note here, that without the necessity for better knowledge of petroleum system for successful hydrocarbon exploration that led to detailed 3D and 2D seismic data interpretation of all stratigraphic levels in the area it would not be possible to present such studies either regional, sedimentological or geochemical. All relevant source rocks were evaluated and as the Mikulov Marls of Upper Jurassic age is one of the most important ones in the area they were studied for its areal extent, total organic carbon content, its thermal maturity and petrographic composition of organic matter (Paper 1). Then, also the mineralogy of clay minerals present in Mikulov Marls was studied in relation to their thermal maturity (Paper 4). The Middle Jurassic Gresten and Nikolčice Formations were studied as well as they belong among the most important reservoir rocks in the area. The depositional environment and provenance of Gresten Formation were studied using all possible well cores and 3D seismic data for interpretation of its facies associations and for determination of their provenance (including heavy mineral studies) (Paper 2). The similar study focusing the Nikolčice Formation was done (Paper 3) where the facies analyses supported by the regional geological interpretation of 3D seismic, heavy minerals study and petrography led together with the study concerning the Gresten Formation to the better knowledge of the whole depositional environment during the Middle Jurassic series in the area of south-eastern slopes of Bohemian Massif. Finally, the areal extent of Namurian deposits was interpreted using the 3D seismic data and together with the detailed studies of petrography and organic geochemistry of carefully chosen cores from hydrocarbon exploration wells allowed its comparison to the Namurian system in Upper Silesian Coal Basin (Paper 5).
