Portréty císařoven, vznikající mezi 4. a 6. stoletím, přirozeně reagují změnou své vnější formy na transformaci, kterou procházelo vnímání ženy v pozdně antické společnosti. Nejde při nich o detailní zachycení rysů portrétované, ale o zdůraznění jejího postavení a ideálních vlastností.
