Nevidomá zkušenost: disabilita jako asambláž a vztah mezi diskurzem, tělem a zkušeností

Visually Impaired Experience: Disability as an Assemblage and the Relationship between Discourse, Body, and Experience

Abstract:

Disertace se zabývá zkušeností nevidomých lidí na průsečíku diskurzů a těla. Je ukotvena v oboru disability studies, do jejichž debaty vstupuji sociologickou cestou. Ve zkušenosti lidí, se kterými jsem prováděla rozhovory a etnografická pozorování, se odráží koncept disability, který stojí na vymezení správného a nesprávného subjektu a těla, potažmo normy a jinakosti, a snoubí se v něm systém státní péče, instituce, organizace či přístup okolních lidí. Vedle toho, jak se o disabilitě mluví a jaké příběhy jsou o ní vyprávěny, mě zajímá, jak se konstruuje a udržuje a co tento koncept dělá a co a jak proměňuje. Koncept disability se protíná se zrakem, který buď nevidí, nebo vidí pouze světlo, tmu či barvy a lidé s takovým zrakem jsou označeni za nevidomé. Nevidomost nepřináleží pouze tělu, ale je neoddělitelná od disability, včetně jejích negativních konotací. Ani samotný pojem „vidět“ se neodehrává pouze na úrovni těla, ale odráží se v něm konceptualizace zraku a ne-zraku se způsoby, jak se o zraku hovoří a co se za zrak ne/považuje. Sociologickým analytickým nástrojem, jak zkoumat konstrukci disability, je koncept asambláže Gillesa Deleuze a Félixe Guattariho. Asambláž tvoří heterogenní rhizomatická spojení, organická i anorganická, jazyková i materiální a umožňuje pojímat disabilitu ve své dynamice, která dostává v určitých situacích stabilní kontury. K teritorializační ose asambláže, tedy k tomu, co dává disabilitě kontury, se vztahuje (mimo jiné) zkušenost, pojmy, které se s ní pojí, rozpoznání postižení okolními lidmi i interakce s nimi. Zkušenost zakládá, jak o disabilitě mé komunikační partnerky a partneři mluví, jak se k ní vztahují, jak s ní zacházejí či jak se vůči ní vymezují a co disabilita způsobuje v jejich životech. Anglické slovo disability v sobě evokuje zneschopnění a nezpůsobilost a přestože takový význam koresponduje s asymetrickým vztahem mezi postižením a normou, zároveň vystihuje i povahu asambláže. V ní jde o to, co tato asambláž znemožňuje/zneschopňuje, ale současně co umožňuje/je schopná. Tyto ne/schopnosti nejsou konstantní, protože asambláž není fixní, ale proměňuje se podle toho, která spojení vytváří. Dis/abilita, tedy ne/schopnost, je zdánlivě objektivním měřítkem, podle kterého lze určit, že někdo postižený je a někdo není. A např. díky odstranění bariér je možné tuto disabilitu zmírnit či zrušit. Ale diskurz postižení se nezakládá pouze na ne/schopnosti provést určité aktivity, ale i na způsobech, jakým se provádějí. Lidé, kteří jsou tzv. postižení, mnoho těchto činností také vykonávají, ale dělají je jinak a díky jiným spojením než lidé tzv. zdraví. Člověk, který očima nevidí, nemůže tvořit některá spojení, která může vytvářet vidící člověk. Ale může vytvářet jiná. Představa neschopnosti vykonávat určitým způsobem nějakou činnost zasahuje mínění i o schopnostech dalších, zvlášť když jejich konceptualizace stojí na ideje autonomního subjektu. Zkušenost mých komunikačních partnerů a partnerek s interakcemi s ostatními lidmi vyjevuje průsečíky mezi zrakem a diskurzem o disabilitě a problémy a starosti, kterým musí čelit a jež souvisí s představami či mýty, které se k nevidomým lidem vážou, a s pravidly a normami, které jsou nastaveny na tzv. zdravé lidi. Diskurz postižení se promítá jak do institucionální, tak do osobní roviny, a tyto roviny jej nadále reprodukují. Reprodukce nicméně není konstantní a absolutní a lidé v institucích a v osobních setkáních tento diskurz proměňují. Přestože se mé komunikační partnerky a partneři často vymezovali proti konceptu postižení a konotacím, které vyvolává, bylo pro ně v určitých chvílích důle

žité, aby jejich okolí vědělo, že nevidí, protože jedině tak může být vnímavé k jejich potřebám a možnostem, které se v některých situacích od vidících lidí liší. Ve výzkumu se ukázala jako důležitá vzájemná schopnost a ochota lidí být otevřený a všímavý k potřebám různých osob a také ohebnost pravidel a zvyklostí, které se mají vyjednávat společně.

Abstract:

My thesis deals with the experience of visually impaired people at the intersections of body and discourse. It is based in the field of disability studies which I approach sociologically. The experience of my communication partners, with whom I made interviews and ethnographic observations, reflect the concept of disability that lies in delimiting the healthy, abled bodies and subjects, thus also defining norms and otherness. It also connects the systems of state welfare, institutions and organizations, and the attitudes of other people. Besides the ways of how disability is talked about and what stories are told about it, I am also interested in how this concept is constructed and maintained; what it does and what it changes. Disability intersects with sight, which either does not see at all or sees only light, dark or colors, and people with this kind of sight are called visually impaired. Being visually impaired is not just of bodily nature, it is an experience inseparable from disability, including its negative connotations. Neither the very concept of “sight” has only bodily manifestations; it reflects the conceptualization of sight and non-sight and the ways, how sight is talked about, what is considered to be non/sight. My sociological-analytical tool for examining the construction of disability is the concept of assemblage by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. An assemblage creates heterogeneous rhizomatic connections, both organic and inorganic, language and material, and it makes possible to capture disability in its dynamics that attains stable contours in certain situations. The territorialization axis of an assemblage, which gives disability its contours, among other things relates to experience, to notions and concepts, and to the recognition of impairment by other people and interactions with them. Experience defines how my communication partners talk about disability, how they relate to it, how they define themselves against it, and what disability does in their lives. The word disability evokes a lack of ability and skills, and even if this meaning corresponds to the asymmetrical relationship between an impairment and a norm, at the same time, it characterizes an assemblage. It concerns what this assemblage disables and at the same time what it enables. Dis/abilities are not constant since an assemblage is not fixed; it changes according to the connections it creates. Dis/ability is supposed to work as relatively objectified measure according to which it is possible to say that someone is disabled and someone is not. And thanks to the removal of barriers, a disability can be alleviated. But the discourse of impairment is not based only on dis/ability to carry out certain activities, but also on the ways in which they are done. People who are “disabled” are also able to carry out many of these activities; only they do them in different ways and through different connections than “healthy” people. People who cannot use their eyes to see cannot create certain connections, but they can create others. The notion of inability to carry out some activities tends to affect also the perception of other abilities, mainly if their conceptualization rests on the idea of an autonomous subject. The experience of my communication partners with interactions with other people reveals intersections between sight and the discourse of disability, and problems and worries that they have to deal with and that are connected to notions and myths about disabled people and to norms that are set according to so-called healthy people. The discourse of disability gets projected at institutional as well as personal level, and these levels further reproduce it. The reproduction, however, is not constant and absolute and people in institutions as well as in personal interactions change it. tions, it was important for them that the others know they cannot see. Since only then, other people can be sensitive to their needs and to their possibilities, which differ from those of sighted people. What my research also showed as important were the ability and willingness to be mutually open and the flexibility of rules and customs that should be negotiated together.
