Jewish Religious Motives in the Classical Music Pieces for the Cello

Abstract:

Tato práce mapuje klasický sólový repertoár pro violoncello, který explicitně odkazuje ke své inspiraci v synagogální liturgii. První část této práce postupuje podle jednotlivých židovských liturgických textů. Po krátkém uvedení do jejich historického kontextu a do jejich role v synagogální bohoslužbě a židovské kultuře následuje rozbor skladeb inspirovaných těmito texty. Zvláštní zřetel je kladen na interpretaci konkrétních míst tak, aby odpovídala liturgickému či kulturnímu kontextu svých liturgických předloh, ale i technické i estetické konvenci kantoriální performance. U liturgických textů, kde existuje velké množství instrumentálních zpracování pro sólové violoncello, jako jsou Kol Nidrei či Kadiš, se rozbor omezuje na vybrané kusy. Tímto způsobem jsou v první části práce zpracovány skladby nesoucí název Jizkor, Kadiš, Kina, Kol Nidrei, Ejcha, Viduj, Hamavdil, Haftara, Adon Olam, Eli Zion, Barechu, Bracha, Halel nebo Kohelet. Vedle skladeb inspirovaných konkrétními liturgickými texty přináší práce i rozbor suity Ze židovského života Ernesta Blocha a jeho rapsodie Schelomo. Autoři klasických skladeb pro sólové violoncello, jež se nechávají inspirovat výše zmíněnými židovskými liturgickými texty, pokrývají široké časové období od Francie a Německa konce 19. století až po současné izraelské a americké skladatele. Violoncello ve většině těchto skladeb zaujímá roli synagogálního kantora a interpret se proto musí přizpůsobit hudební estetické konvenci aškenázské synagogy. Druhá část práce se věnuje čistě teorii intepretace a přináí obecnější závěry založné na poznatcích vyplývajících z podrobné analýzy jednotlivých skladeb v první části práce. Vedle obecných principů přístupu ke studiu a interpretaci klasické hudby inspirované synagogální liturgií je zvláštní pozornost věnována těm specifickým výrazovým prostředkům při hře na violoncello, které představují instrumentální imitaci kantoriálního zpěvu. Práce přináší rozsáhlou evidenci o výjimečné roli, jíž má violoncello v klasických skladbách zpracovávajícíh témata synagogální liturgie, i o nutném minimálním povědomí o synagogální liturgii, bez něhož se interpret neobejde, usiluje-li o autentický hudební výraz.

Abstract:

This dissertation maps the classical solo repertoire for the cello, which explicitly refers to its inspiration in the synagogal liturgy. The first part proceeds according to the particular Jewish liturgical texts. After introductory remarks on their historical background and their role in synagogue worship and Jewish culture, a musical analysis of compositions inspired by these texts follows. Special attention is paid to the issue of interpreting particular musical passages in the manner which carefully respects the original liturgical context and the technical and aesthetic convention of cantorial performance. In the case of liturgical texts, where there are any amount of instrumental adaptations for solo cello, such as Kol Nidrei or Kaddish, the analysis is limited to selected pieces. In the manner, the compositions entitled Yizkor, Kaddish, Kina, Kol Nidrei, Eikha, Vidui, Hamavdil, Haftarah, Adon Olam, Eli Zion, Barekh, Berakhah, Hallel, and Kohelet are treated. In addition to compositions inspired by specific liturgical texts, this dissertation also analyses two compositions of Ernest Bloch: Suite from the Jewish Life of and his famous rhapsody Schelomo. The authors of classical compositions for solo cello inspired by the above-mentioned Jewish liturgical texts, cover a wide period of time, starting from the 19th century France and Germany up to the contemporary Israeli and American composers. In most of these compositions, the cello plays the role of a synagogue cantor, and the performer is mostly expected to adapt to the musical convention of an Ashkenazi synagogue. The second part of this dissertation deals solely with the theory of interpretation, and brings general conclusions based on the findings resulting from a detailed analysis of individual compositions in the first part. In addition to the general principles of the interpretation of the classical music pieces inspired by the synagogue liturgy, special attention is paid to those means of expression in cello playing which represent an instrumental imitation of cantorial singing. The dissertation brings extensive evidence of the exceptional role that the cello plays in classical compositions which adapts the themes from the synagogue liturgy and points out to a necessary basic knowledge which the performer striving for an authentic musical expression must acquire.
