On social capital and health status among Czech population aged 50 and over in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá explorací možné existence vztahu mezi úrovní sociálního kapitálu a zdravím u české populace starší 50 let. V úvodní části práce jsou vymezeny základní užívané koncepty a dále je představena oblast výzkumu vlivu sociálního kapitálu na zdravotní stav. Druhou část práce sekundární analýza dat z čtvrtého běhu výběrového šetření The Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe. Dle výsledků této studie je participace na různých kolektivních aktivitách (s výjimkami v případě účasti na charitativních a náboženských aktivitách) i po kontrole pro socioekonomické a demografické charakteristiky respondentů slabě asociována jak s lepším sebehodnocením zdravotního stavu, tak s nižším výskytem depresivní poruchy. Stejně tak je vyšší pociťovaná interpersonální důvěra asociovaná s lepším sebehodnocením zdravotního stavu i nižším výskytem depresivní poruchy. V případě interpersonální důvěry byl ovšem vztah se zdravotními ukazateli nelineární. Respondenti, kteří pouze spíše důvěřovali ostatním lidem, hodnotili své zdraví jako lepší, než respondenti, kteří ostatním lidem důvěřovali zcela. Obdobný výsledek byl objeven ve vztahu interpersonální důvěry a výskytu depresivní poruchy. Signifikantní vztah mezi sociálním kapitálem a zdravotním stavem byl ovšem nalezen pouze na individuální úrovni. Po agregaci individuálních výsledků do krajů České republiky a kontrole pro další proměnné, ztratila korelace na signifikanci. Rozsah práce je: 83 049 znaků

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis investigates the possibility of relationship between the level of social capital and health in Czech population aged 50 and older. First, key concepts used in this study are described; subsequently the area of research concerning the influence of social capital on health is presented. The second part of this study consists of secondary data analysis from 4th run of The Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe. According to results, the participation on various collective activities (except for charity and religious activities) is associated with better self-rated health as well as with lower rate of depressive disorder even when socioeconomic and demographic characteristics were controlled. Similarly, higher perceived interpersonal trust was associated with better self-rated health and lower rate of depressive disorder. However the relationship with health was non-linear in the case of interpersonal trust. Respondents who were rather likely to trust other people judged their health as better, than respondents who trust other people unconditionally. Similar relationship has been found between interpersonal trust and the rate of depressive disorder. However statistically significant relationship between social capital and health was found only on individual level. The correlation on the ecological (individual values aggregated to the regions of Czech Republic) level lost its significance after the aggregated socioeconomic characteristics were controlled.
