Secondary sex ratio in cervids

Abstract:

Ačkoli je teoretická schopnost rodičů ovlivňovat poměr pohlaví jejich potomstva poměrně oblíbeným objektem velkého množství studií, mnoho aspektů této problematiky nebylo dosud dostatečně objasněno. Tato bakalářská práce je literární rešerší na dané téma s cílem diskutovat výsledky dosud publikovaných vědeckých prací v oboru výzkumu adaptivního sekundárního poměru pohlaví u jelenovitých. Po důkladném studiu dostupné literatury musím konstatovat, že pro většinu zásadních faktorů lze nalézt přibližně stejné množství studií zjišťujících a nezjišťujících jejich význam. Značná část studií si navíc navzájem protiřečí, a to často i v rámci jednoho druhu. Nicméně i přesto lze zaznamenat jisté závislosti. U většiny druhů starší jedinci a jedinci v lepší kondici více investují do samčího potomstva. Výjimku pak mohou představovat srnci (Capreolus capreolus) a jelenci rodu Odocoileus, u kterých se zřejmě významně může uplatňovat Local resource competition model. Pohlaví potomka je značně ovlivněno i dominancí matky, vlivy počasí a načasováním početí a porodu. Platnost Trivers-Willardovy hypotézy sice nebyla potvrzena všemi studiemi, nicméně se zřejmě do jisté míry uplatňovat může. Dále jsem se pokoušel argumentovat, že výsledky některých studií mohou být ovlivněny malým vzorkem či dokrmováním ad libitum. Nové studie na toto téma jsou jistě namístě, neboť mnoha druhům jelenovitých dosud nebyla věnována pozornost a také vliv otce není příliš často studován.

Abstract:

Although theoretical ability of parents to vary the sex ratio of their offspring is relatively popular object of huge number of papers, many aspects of this problematics have not been clarified enough yet. This thesis consists of a literature review of given topic aiming to discuss results of published scientific papers in the field of research of the adaptive secondary sex ratio in cervids. After thorough study of available literature, I would like to state, that for majority of fundamental effects can be found approximately same number of studies, which are, and are not finding their importance. In addition, many studies contradict each other, often even when the same species was studied. Nevertheless, some dependences can be observed. At most species older individuals and individuals in better condition invest more in male offspring. An exception can constitute roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and deer of genus Odocoileus, for which Local resource competition model may be significantly applied. Offspring sex is considerably affected by mother's dominance rank, weather, and timing of conception and parturition. Although the validity of Trivers-Willard hypothesis has not been confirmed by all studies, it can be probably in some extent applied. Furthermore, I tried to argue, that the results of some studies can be affected by small sample size or additional ad libitum feeding. New studies on this topic are certainly worthwhile, as many cervid species have not been studied yet and the effect of father has not been studied very often, too.
