To Swim Against the Stream: Social Aspects of Vegan Upbringing

Abstract:

Diplomová práce pojednává o sociálních aspektech výchovy k veganství. Kombinací kvalitativních výzkumných metod se snaží zmapovat a popsat negativní i pozitivní aspekty konfrontace matek vychovávající své děti netradičním způsobem s většinovou společností a státní mocí. První část práce tvoří teoretický rámec této problematiky, následuje analytická část, jež je organizována do čtyř větších tematických celků týkajících se sféry lékařství, vzdělávání, rodiny a podpůrných aspektů veganského života, a podložena výpověďmi veganských matek (potažmo otců). Ty byly získány polostrukturovanými rozhovory, ale i ze záznamů debat na veganském festivalu či v propagačních/edukačních materiálech. Ačkoliv výzkum nebyl prováděn v celorepublikovém kontextu, saturace dat prokazuje dostatečné naplnění výzkumného vzorku i validitu výstupů výzkumu. Ten prokázal, že mezi hlavní překážky patří legislativní ustanovení a normy, problematická je tedy především oblast zdravotnictví a školství.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis analyzes social aspects of upbringing children in vegan families. There are explored and described negative and positive sides of confrontation between mothers bringing their children up unconventionally and mainstream society along with a institutional power throught combination of various qualitative research methods. The first part of the thesis presents a theoretical framework of this issue followed by an analytical part, which is organized into four thematic units focused on health care, education, personal relationships and aspects supporting vegan lifestyle. They are based on testimonies of vegan mothers (eventually fathers) which were obtained from semi-structured interviews, from records of discussions at a vegan festival and from promotional/educational materials. Despite the lack of a nationwide context, data saturation indicates sufficient fulfillment of a research sample and validity of research outputs. They show that the main obstacles are legislation and social regulations, particularly in the area of health care and education.
