Totalitarianism: Society in The Handmaid's Tale

Abstract:

Tématem této diplomové práce s názvem "Totalitarismus: Obraz společnosti v díle Příběh služebnice" je dystopická Republika Gileád, vytvořená spisovatelkou Margaret Atwoodovou v jejích románech Příběh služebnice a The Testaments. Cílem práce je prostřednictvím společenskovědní analýzy dokázat, že se jedná o stát s totalitním režimem. Práce je členěna do několika částí: v první části jsou představeny jednotlivé výchozí zdroje, druhá část analyzuje Gileád z hlediska politologie a filozofie a třetí část analyzuje stát z pohledu sociologie a religionistiky.

Abstract:

The theme of this diploma thesis named "Totalitarianism: Society in The Handmaid's Tale" is the analysis of the dystopic Republic of Gilead, created by the writer Margaret Atwood in her novels The Handmaid's Tale and The Testaments. The aim of the thesis is to prove that it is a state with a totalitarian regime. The thesis is divided into several parts: the first part introduces the individual sources, the second part analyzes Gilead in terms of political science and philosophy and the third part analyzes the state from the perspective of sociology and religion.
