Práce se zabývá vlivem teorie společenské smlouvy na pozdější ústavní myšlení a všímá si podobnosti mezi teorii společenské smlouvy a moderními ústavami. Autor zastává tezi, že první moderní ústavy vznikly ve snaze napodobit společenskou smlouvu, jak byla vyložena v dílech právníků a politických filozofů 17. století, zejména Johna Locka.
