Historical Sociology as One of the Theories of International Relations

Anotácia:

Hlavním cílem magisterské práce bylo analyzovat pozici historické sociologie v rámci teorie mezinárodních vztahů. V první části byla popsána historická sociologie, její vznik, vývoj a nejvýznamnější autoři. Charles Tilly, Michael Mann, Theda Skocpolová, Stephen Hobden, John Hobson a Martin Shaw jsou významní i pro obor mezinárodních vztahů. V druhé části byla provedena komparace historické sociologie s neorealistickou teorií v mezinárodních vztazích, konkrétně s dílem Kennetha Waltze. Hypotéza byla vyjádřena tvrzením, že historická sociologie a Waltzův neorealismus mají velmi podobné klíčové premisy. Byly zkoumány otázky struktury, domácího a mezinárodního prostředí, národního státu, války a míru v pojetí obou přístupů. Hypotéza byla v případě některých autorů historické sociologie potvrzena (Theda Skocpolová, částečně i Charles Tilly a Michael Mann), ale pro další autory musela být odmítnuta (Stephen Hobden, John Hobson, Martin Shaw).

Abstract:

The main aim of the master's thesis was to analyse the position of historical sociology within the boundaries of the theory of international relations. In the first part, historical sociology is described, along with its origins, development, and its most noted authors. Charles Tilly, Michael Mann, Theda Skocpol, Stephen Hobden, John Hobson and Martin Shaw are important authors even in the discipline of international relations. In the second part, historical sociology was compared with the international relations’ theory of neorealism, specifically with the work of Kenneth Waltz. The hypothesis was based on the statement that historical sociology and Waltz’s neorealism have very similar key premises. The approaches to structure, national and international environment, national state, war and peace were examined in both concepts. The hypothesis was confirmed in the case of several authors (Theda Skocpol, and partly both Charles Tilly and Michael Mann), while it had to be rejected in the case of others (Stephen Hobden, John Hobson, Martin Shaw).
