Toward the sympathetic vampire: From Bram Stoker’s Dracula to Stephenie Meyer’s The Twilight Saga.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce zkoumá pojetí upíra v literatuře a zaměřuje se zejména na jeho sympatické ztvárnění. Moje bakalářská práce se skládá ze dvou hlavních částí a to teoretické části a samotné analýzy. V první části se věnuji životopisům Brama Stokera a Stephenie Meyer. Dále uvádím shrnutí dějů novel, které jsou zkoumány v analytické části mojí práce. Analytická část mojí bakalářské práce se skládá ze tří sekcí. V první z nich věnuji pozornost rozdílům mezi Drákulou a ságou Stmívání a zaměřuji se na změnu pojetí upíra, zejména jeho posun od představitele zla k jeho zobrazení jako sympatické a lidštější bytosti. Druhá sekce mojí analýzy se zabývá historií sympatického upíra a dále zkoumá, proč nám může upír připadat přitažlivý. V této sekci je také brána v úvahu doba, kdy byla tato díla napsána. V závěru této sekce naznačuji, že melodramatické vlastnosti jsou velmi důležitým faktorem při posunu upíra k jeho sympatickému ztvárnění. V poslední sekci mojí analýzy se zabývám otázkami pohlaví a sexuality ve vztahu k upírům a zaměřuji se také na to, do jaké míry jeho sympatické pojetí ovlivnilo tyto faktory.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis examines the portrayal of the vampire in literature focusing especially on the tendency towards sympathetic portrayal of the phenomenon. The bachelor thesis consists of two main parts; the theoretical part and the analysis. The first part is devoted to the biographies of Bram Stoker and Stephenie Meyer and to the plot summaries of their novels that are examined in the following analysis. The analysis itself includes three sections. In the first section of the analysis I am exploring the differences between Dracula and The Twilight Saga considering the changing portrayal of the vampire and it’s moving from evil to sympathetic and more human-like territory. In the second section of the analysis I am drawing attention to the history and background of the sympathetic vampire. I am trying to discover what is appealing on the vampires in both novels and to what extent the time of their production was important. It is suggested there that melodramatic features are also crucial elements that makes the vampires in The Twilight Saga sympathetic. In the last section of my analysis gender and sexuality issues of the vampire are examined in both novels concerning the sympathetic portrayal of the vampire in Stephenie Meyer’s novels.
