Religious Dimension of the Theories of International Relations and Revision of the Secularization Theory

Abstract:

Vůdčí teorie mezinárodních vztahů – realismus, liberalismus a konstruktivismus vznikaly na paradigmatických základech klasické sekularizační teorie, která tvrdí, že s vzestupem modernity bude náboženství odsouzeno k zániku, a to jak ve veřejné, tak v soukromé sféře. Tyto teorie považovaly náboženství za epifenomenální k realitě mezinárodních vztahů a nereflektovaly náboženskou dimenzi mezinárodní politiky v žádném směru. Tato diplomová práce tvrdí, že klasická sekularizační teorie byla překonána současným vývojem událostí na mezinárodní scéně, nicméně nepovažuje tento fakt jako nutnost k zavržení dosavadních teoretických přístupů. Na místo toho dokazuje, že i do původně sekulárních teorií lze dimenzi náboženství implementovat a studovat dále náboženskou dimenzi v MV pomocí již existujících metod. Práce dále poukazuje na to, jak lze náboženství a jeho roli v MV konceptualizovat, což demonstruje na čtyřech základních tématech mezinárodně-vztahového výzkumu, kterými jsou moc, konflikt, spolupráce a normy.

Abstract:

The leading theories of International Relations – realism, liberalism and constructivism – emerged on the paradigmatic bases of the classical secularization theory which claims that the with the rise of modernity, religion is doomed to vanish from the public as well as personal sphere of social life. These theories therefore treated religion as epiphenomenal to the reality of international relations and did not reflect the religious dimension of international politics in any way. This thesis argues that the classical secularization has been outdated by the recent development in the international arena, however, does not imply that this fact necessarily needs to lead to the rejection of the existing approaches. Furthermore, the thesis points out different possibilities of how the religion and its role in IR can be conceptualized, this is demonstrated within the framework of four main IT topics, these are power, conflict, cooperation and norms.
