Cyclotomic polynomials

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce je věnována algebraickým objektům zvaným kruhové polynomy, jejichž kořeny jsou právě primitivní n-té odmocniny z jedné. V první kapitole předestírám základní pojmy a poznatky z oblasti algebry a algebraické teorie čísel, které jsou potřeba ve zbytku práce. Předmětem druhé kapitoly jsou kruhové polynomy a pojmy s nimi související, je představena definice kruhových polynomů nad racionálními čísly, je popsáno jejich zobecnění pro libovolné těleso; většina kapitoly se pak zabývá různými vlastnostmi kruhových polynomů. Třetí kapitola je věnována třem příkladům aplikací kruhových polynomů — v důkazu speciálního případu Dirichletovy věty o aritmetických posloupnostech, v řešení několika diofantovských rovnic a v důkazu Wedderburnovy věty.

Abstract:

The subject of this thesis are cyclotomic polynomials, the roots of which are exactly primitive n-th roots of unity. The first chapter introduces basic notions and results from Algebra and Algebraic number theory, which are needed in the rest of the thesis. The subject of the second chapter is that of cyclotomic polynomials and related concepts, a definition of cyclotomic polynomials over the rationals is introduced, as well as an extended notion over a generic field; most of the chapter is then dedicated to different properties of cyclotomic polynomials. The third chapter is concerned with three examples of applications of cyclotomic polynomials — in the proof of a special case of Dirichlet's theorem on arithmetic progressions, in solving a few particular diophantine equations, and in the proof of Wedderburn's little theorem.
