Analysis of Oscar Wilde's Salome on the Basis of Aristotle's Poetics

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je určit, zda Salome: Tragádie v jednom dějství je, anebo není „dokonalým dramatem“ v antickém slova smyslu a v jakém směru překonal Oscar Wilde estetické názory svojí velké inspirace, Aristotela. Práce je rozdělena do čtyř kapitol. První kapitola krátce představuje hru Salome. Následující kapitola se věnuje pouze Aristotelově Poetice. Kapitola začíná všeobecným představením Poetiky a pokračuje definicemi a vysvětleními termínů a principů, které jsou potřebné pro samotnou analýzu Salome. Třetí kapitola této bakalářské práce se zabývá dílami antických gramatiků Euanthia a Aelia Donata. V poslední kapitole se soustředím na samotnou analýzu Salome. V závěru zobecňuji výsledky již zmiňovaného rozboru, opisuji, jakým způsobem uchopil Oscar Wilde tvorbu děje a za jakým účelem byla tato tragédie vytvořena.

Abstract:

The aim of my BA diploma thesis is to determine whether Salome: A Tragedy in One Act is or is not ‘the perfect drama’ in the classical sense and in what way did Oscar Wilde challenge aesthetic views of his inspirer, Aristotle. The thesis is divided into four chapters. The first chapter provides a short introduction to Oscar Wilde’s Salome. The next chapter is devoted solely to Aristotle’s Poetics. The general description of Poetics is provided here and the longest part of the second chapter is concerned with the definitions and explanations of terms and principles which are necessary for the actual analysis of Wilde’s Salome. The third chapter of this BA thesis comments on the works by Classical grammarians, Euanthius and Aelius Donatus. In the last chapter, I focus on the analysis of Salome. The analysis is based on the principles introduced in the first three chapters of this thesis. In the conclusion, I generalize the observations made in the fourth chapter, describe how the construction of a plot was handled by Oscar Wilde when writing Salome and with what purpose was the whole tragedy created.
