Social construction of a Czech modern nation in the work of Alois Jirásek

Abstract:

Tato práce je zaměřena na zkoumání role národních mýtů v době národně-emancipačního hnutí v českých zemích v 19.století. Cílem naší práce bylo zodpovědět otázku, jak byl čes-ký moderní národ sociálně zkonstruován v díle Aloise Jiráska. K analýze bylo použito kvantitativní metody analýzy obsahu v rámci sociognoseologického paradigmatu. V práci je nastíněna stručná konceptualizace pojmů: národ, nacionalismus a národní identita a teo-retické koncepty týkající se studia národních mýtů. Je zde podrobně rozpracována teorie národních mýtů dle G. Schöpflina, která byla využita v naší analýze. Dospěli jsme k názoru, že hypotézu, že národní mýty sehrály důležitou roli v českém národotvorném hnutí, můžeme potvrdit. Zjistili jsme, že mýty během národotvorného procesu plnily tři důležité úlohy: Za prvé sloužily k uvědomění si příslušnosti k národu. Za druhé tvořily sou-část kolektivní paměti, v níž je obsažena společná historie, a za třetí skrz ně byl utvářen osud společenství. Jirásek prostřednictvím tohoto díla podal obraz českého národa, v soula-du s primordiálním hlediskem, jako odvěké reálně existující entity, která je vymezena jazy-kově, etnicky a územně. I přes to, že mýty a jejich reinterpretace sehrály během národního hnutí důležitou úlohu, musíme ale upozornit, že samy mýty k vytvoření či znovuzrození národa nestačí.

Abstract:

This study focuses on investigation the role of national myths in the time of nationally-emancipative movement in the Czech country in 19th century. The main goal is to answer the question: How was the modern Czech nation socially constructed in the work by Alois Jirásek. We used quantitative method called content analysis. We use it in the sense of sociognoseological paradigm. In the work there is a brief conceptualization of main notions, such as nation, nationalism, national identity, as well as main theoretical concepts of national myths. We analyze syntactically the theory by George Schöpflin, which we use in our analysis. We reach the conclusion that we can confirm our hypothesis that national myths played a significant role in the process of the Czech national movement. We found out that myths had during the national process three important functions. Firstly, they served for consciousness affiliation to the nation. Secondly, they created the part of collective memory, where the common history is contained. Thirdly, through them the destiny of the society was created and spread. A. Jirásek in his work gave an image of the Czech nation as a time-honored, really existing entity, which is defined by language, ethnical and land basics. Despite we confirmed their important role in the Czech national movement, we must object that the myths by themselves are not able to create or rebirth the nation.
